A PBS documentary investigation estimated her wealth at more than $57.5 million in today’s money, but that is a reconstruction—not a verified probate total. The same program mentions estimates of around $100 million without establishing them as audited figures.
What was Grace Kelly’s net worth?
The most supportable published figure in the available evidence is PBS’s estimate of more than $57.5 million in today’s money. The documentary, Grace Kelly: The Missing Millions, describes a reconstruction based on scattered evidence about her earnings, inheritance, property, clothes and jewelry. It does not present a publicly released final inventory or an audited balance sheet.
PBS also notes that some estimates put her wealth at around $100 million. The program does not identify a specific estimator or establish that higher figure as an independently verified valuation. Neither number should be presented as a confirmed net worth.
Why her estate value remains uncertain
A missing will and unclear asset boundaries
PBS reports that Monaco’s palace declined to disclose a third will. Without that document and a complete public accounting, it is not possible to establish which assets belonged to Kelly personally, what passed to family or charity, or what was associated with the royal household. Adding Grimaldi family or royal-household wealth to Kelly’s personal net worth would not be justified.

Estimates combine different kinds of evidence
The documentary’s reconstruction considers career earnings alongside inherited money, property and personal items. Those categories do not automatically translate into a single reliable net-worth figure: ownership, valuation date and what was included all matter. The opened PBS material does not establish the estimate’s calculation method or inflation index, so its “today’s money” figure should be understood as the documentary’s presentation rather than a standardized, independently checked conversion.
What the known figures do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it refers to | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than $57.5 million in today’s money | PBS documentary reconstruction of Kelly’s wealth | An estimate from scattered evidence, not a verified estate total. PBS does not state a publication year on the opened program page. |
| Around $100 million | Higher estimates mentioned by PBS | PBS does not identify a specific estimator or establish this as an audited figure. Publication year is not stated on the opened program page. |
| Just over $1 million in 1960; nearly $11.5 million in the documentary’s present-value conversion | Jack Kelly’s estate, as described by PBS | These are the documentary’s figures and conversion, not Grace Kelly’s personal estate value. |
| About $190,000 in 1960; roughly $1.7 million in the documentary’s conversion | Grace Kelly’s calculated share of her father’s estate | PBS says she effectively surrendered this amount as part of her dowry. |
| £18,000 in 1982; about $350,000 in the documentary’s current-value conversion | An Irish cottage value stated in Kelly’s Irish will, as described by PBS | This is one asset, not a measure of her complete estate. |
All figures in the table are reported or calculated by PBS; they are not independently verified totals. In particular, the cottage valuation cannot be used as a proxy for her overall wealth.
How her career and marriage shaped the question
The Princess Grace Foundation-USA records that Kelly was born in 1929, began acting in 1950 and appeared in films including High Noon, The Country Girl, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. She retired from acting at 26 to marry Prince Rainier III in 1956 and became Princess of Monaco. The Foundation says she died in 1982 at age 52 after injuries in a traffic collision. Its biography of Princess Grace provides this background.
PBS’s account connects her marriage and career choices to the financial story: her acting income ended when she became Princess of Monaco, while the documentary examines her father’s estate and dowry, an Irish cottage, family property, clothes and jewels. That context helps explain why estimates vary; it does not establish a single final number.

Why later licensing income is a separate issue
Kelly’s posthumous name-and-image licensing is not money she personally received during her lifetime and should not be folded into her net worth at death. The Princess Grace Foundation-USA says it holds exclusive rights and facilitates licensing of her name and likeness; its official licensing information describes that activity. Licensing proceeds that benefit the Foundation are not the same as personal estate assets.
