Re:

Got an old Kindle? Amazon ended new-book access—here’s what owners can still do

Amazon’s May 20, 2026 cutoff affects specific 2012-and-earlier Kindles and Fire tablets. Existing downloads may remain readable, but new purchases, borrowing, downloads, registration, and Send to Kindle are gone.

Amazon ended online support for Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier on May 20, 2026. Those devices can no longer buy, borrow, or download new Kindle books through the device, and Amazon says they can no longer connect to its services. They are not automatically useless: books already downloaded should remain readable while the device stays registered and logged in, and personal files can still be copied by USB. The targeted upgrade promotion reported for affected customers—a 20% discount on selected newer Kindles plus an e-book credit—had a June 20, 2026 redemption deadline, so treat it as expired unless a new offer appears in your account.

Which Kindles and Fire tablets are affected?

The cutoff is based on the model and its release year, not simply on whether a device looks old. Amazon’s device guide lists these affected e-readers and tablets: Amazon’s Kindle identification guide.

Affected Kindle e-readers

Model Generation or year clue Easy identification clue
Kindle 1st Generation 2007 White body, physical keyboard, five-way controller
Kindle 2nd Generation 2009 Thin white body with a full keyboard
Kindle DX 2010 Large 9.7-inch screen and keyboard
Kindle DX Graphite 2010 Large graphite-colored body
Kindle Keyboard (Kindle 3) 2010 Physical keyboard and page-turn buttons
Kindle 4 2011 Small black touchscreen-free model with navigation buttons
Kindle Touch 2011 Touchscreen with a single physical home button
Kindle 5 2012 Compact black model with navigation buttons
Kindle Paperwhite (1st generation) 2012 First Paperwhite model; front light and a recessed screen

The first Paperwhite is included. Later Paperwhite generations are not on Amazon’s affected list; the Paperwhite 10th Generation, for example, is discussed separately by Amazon here: Amazon’s Paperwhite support discussion.

Affected Fire tablets

  • Kindle Fire (1st Generation)
  • Kindle Fire (2nd Generation)
  • Kindle Fire HD 7 (2nd Generation)
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2nd Generation)

An unregistered device may not have received Amazon’s warning email, so the absence of an email is not proof that a model is supported. Confirm the exact model rather than relying on a seller’s description or the word “old.”

What stopped working on May 20, 2026?

Amazon’s explanation is a loss of Amazon-service connectivity on the affected hardware, not an announcement that every locally stored book was erased. The practical difference is important.

Function Status on an affected device
Books already downloaded to the device Should remain readable while the Kindle stays registered and logged in.
Buy a new Kindle book on the device Unavailable.
Borrow a new title through Kindle services Unavailable on the device.
Download a newly purchased or borrowed title Unavailable through the affected device.
Register or re-register after deregistration Amazon says affected e-readers cannot be registered again.
Send to Kindle Unavailable for the affected e-readers.
USB transfer of personal documents Still available, according to Amazon’s support response.
Kindle account and cloud library Remain available on supported Kindles, current apps, and Kindle Cloud Reader.

Amazon’s detailed statement is in its support thread: support for older Kindle devices.

The warning that can save a still-usable Kindle

Do not deregister or factory-reset an affected Kindle unless you are retiring it permanently. Amazon says a reset or deregistration can leave the device unable to be used with the account again. A battery failure, repair, account change, or accidental reset can therefore end the device’s remaining value as an offline reader.

Keep it charged, registered, and logged in if its downloaded books matter. Do not delete a book merely to save space unless you have confirmed that the title is available on another supported device.

Can you still read your Kindle library?

Yes, with a distinction between local and cloud content:

  • Downloaded books: Existing local copies should remain readable while the device retains its logged-in state.
  • Cloud-only books: Open them on a supported Kindle, the current Kindle app for Android, iOS, Mac, or PC, or Kindle Cloud Reader. Do not assume the old device can fetch them now.
  • Amazon-purchased books: They remain subject to Amazon’s delivery and DRM rules. Buying a title on the website does not guarantee that it can be delivered to a discontinued Kindle.

Amazon has not announced deletion of the account library. The problem is device compatibility, not removal of your purchases.

Adding books and documents by USB

USB is the official remaining route for personal documents. Connect the Kindle to a computer, open its document storage, and copy a legitimately obtained compatible file. EPUB, PDF, MOBI, TXT, and other formats may work depending on the model; older Kindles have narrower format support and may require conversion.

  • Personal and DRM-free files: Usually the most flexible option, subject to the Kindle’s supported formats.
  • Amazon books: DRM and delivery restrictions still apply. A USB cable is not a general method for moving a newly purchased Kindle Store book.
  • Newspapers, newsletters, and library documents: Send to Kindle no longer delivers to the affected e-reader, so download a legitimate file and test USB transfer instead.

Do not use DRM circumvention as a workaround. Use files you are authorized to copy and Amazon-supported transfer methods.

What this means for Libby and library borrowing

In the United States, Libby loans delivered through Amazon generally require the Kindle service to send the book to the device. An affected Kindle may therefore be unable to receive new loans, although a book already downloaded can continue to work until its loan expires.

The result is not identical for every reader. Country, library lending system, title rights, the book’s download status, and the account’s authorization state all matter. Check with your library before assuming that a particular loan or delivery path will work.

Amazon’s upgrade offer: what it was and what it was not

Reports from Amazon customer communications described a targeted promotion for some affected owners:

  • 20% off selected newer Kindle devices;
  • an e-book credit after buying a qualifying replacement;
  • account- and market-specific eligibility; and
  • a reported redemption deadline of June 20, 2026.

U.S. coverage reported a $20 e-book credit, while other markets used different amounts. Ars Technica reported the offer here: Ars Technica’s coverage. The offer was a discount and credit toward a purchase, not a free replacement. Since the deadline has passed, check your Amazon account for any newer promotion rather than assuming the old code still works.

Trade-in is a separate decision

Amazon Trade-In is not automatically the same program as the support-ending promotion. Through Amazon Trade-In, an eligible Kindle is evaluated and may earn an Amazon gift card; some items may also qualify for a promotional discount. Value depends on model, condition, and current eligibility.

Trade-in makes sense only if you are ready to give up the old reader. Before shipping it, make sure books and notes are accessible elsewhere, then follow Amazon’s instructions to deregister or unlock the device. Deregistration is sensible for a retired trade-in, but it can permanently remove the affected Kindle’s remaining offline usefulness.

What to do now: a preservation checklist

  1. Identify the exact model. Use Amazon’s device guide, not a generation guess.
  2. Keep it registered and logged in if downloaded books are important.
  3. Do not factory-reset or deregister it while you still intend to use it.
  4. Review your library elsewhere. Sign in to a supported Kindle, app, or browser and confirm that important purchases are present.
  5. Copy personal documents and notes where the device and software allow.
  6. Test USB transfer with a nonessential, authorized file before depending on it.
  7. Decide whether its hardware still suits you. Physical buttons, a light body, and a distraction-free screen may justify keeping it.
  8. If replacing it, compare total cost. Include trade-in value, any account-specific discount, accessories, storage, and shipping.
  9. If changing ecosystems, audit your library first. Amazon DRM titles may not move to another brand.

Which path fits your reading habits?

Keep the old Kindle

Choose this if you mainly read downloaded books or DRM-free files and value physical buttons, low weight, or offline simplicity. Accept that new Amazon content, normal account recovery, and Send to Kindle are no longer dependable.

Buy a newer Kindle

This is the least disruptive choice for Kindle Store purchases, Kindle Unlimited, synchronization, and Amazon-delivered library books. Current models may add lighting, storage, speed, waterproofing, or color, but they cost money and keep you in Amazon’s DRM ecosystem. Browse Amazon’s Kindle store.

  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Use a phone, tablet, or browser temporarily

The current Kindle apps and Cloud Reader preserve access to the account library without immediate hardware spending. They do not provide E Ink’s battery life or distraction-free experience. Amazon’s Legacy Kindle app for Windows became unsupported on June 30, 2026; use the current desktop app instead: Amazon’s app help page.

Move to Kobo or PocketBook

Kobo and PocketBook can offer broader EPUB workflows, alternative bookstores, and, on selected models, physical page buttons. They do not provide one-click migration for Amazon DRM books; library support and format compatibility vary by country and title.

Choose an Android reader

Devices such as BOOX can run multiple reading services and apps. That flexibility brings more setup, software complexity, and often a higher price than a conventional e-reader.

Buying a used Kindle in 2026

A used Kindle described as “old” is not necessarily affected. If you need current Amazon services, avoid the models listed above and verify the exact generation and release year before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the device can still be registered.
  • Check battery life, screen damage, bright spots, and charging behavior.
  • Verify whether it is ad-supported or ad-free.
  • Make sure the seller has removed their account.
  • Ask whether it is blacklisted or locked.

A 2013-or-later model may still be supported even if it is several generations behind current hardware; support status should be checked by exact model.

A practical decision tree

  • Need new Amazon books, Kindle Unlimited, or Amazon-delivered library books? Use a supported Kindle or a supported app.
  • Only need your downloaded collection? Keep the old Kindle registered and avoid resetting it.
  • Want open EPUB workflows and less vendor lock-in? Compare Kobo or PocketBook.
  • Want multiple apps and bookstores on one E Ink device? Consider an Android reader, accepting the added complexity.
  • Ready to dispose of the old Kindle? Compare Trade-In, local resale, and certified recycling only after securing your books and notes.
