Google did reportedly pause parts of its Kirkland Urban expansion, but the evidence does not show a full withdrawal from Kirkland or a confirmed cancellation of the fourth building. Broderick Group’s first-quarter 2024 market report, described by GeekWire, said Google had not finished interior work in recently completed space, declined to build out about 120,000 square feet associated with a Tableau sublease attempt, and paused plans for a fourth building. King County records later showed the South building’s shell and core complete but no tenant improvements in place as of July 31, 2025. City and permit records show some activity in 2026, without proving that Google revived the original campus plan.
What Google actually paused
The phrase “office buildout” covers several different decisions. The 2024 report did not say that every construction activity stopped or that Google closed its Kirkland offices.

- Interior tenant improvements: Broderick Group reportedly said Google chose not to finish approximately 120,000 square feet that Tableau had attempted to sublease.
- Unfinished space: The broker described more than 400,000 square feet in “shell condition”—structurally built space without completed office interiors.
- Future construction: Plans for a fourth Kirkland Urban building, generally called the East building, were reported as paused.
These claims come from Broderick Group’s market update as reported by GeekWire. The article did not include a Google confirmation of the pause, so the broker report—not a public Google announcement—is the source for the central claim.
What Kirkland Urban was supposed to become
Kirkland Urban is a mixed-use development east of Seattle that combines Google offices with retail, dining and entertainment, including QFC, Shake Shack and Topgolf. Google opened its North and Central office buildings in 2022. The original four-building concept totaled approximately 760,000 square feet, with the South building expected to open in 2023 and the East building targeted for 2025, according to GeekWire’s campus report.

Why “shell condition” matters
A building can be complete on the outside and still not function as an office. Shell-and-core work generally includes the structure and base building systems. Tenant improvements add partitions, finishes, electrical and data distribution, kitchens, meeting rooms, security, furniture and workplace technology.
That distinction explains why the South building could be described as completed from a construction standpoint while remaining largely unusable as a finished Google workplace. The 2024 report concerned interior buildout as well as a future building; it was not simply a claim that cranes stopped across the entire campus.

Timeline: from planned expansion to uncertain follow-through
- April 2022: Google showcased its Kirkland Urban campus. North and Central were open, South was under construction and East was planned for 2025. The company’s stated hybrid model required employees to work in the office at least three days per week, according to GeekWire.
- April 3, 2024: GeekWire reported Broderick Group’s account that Google had not built out certain South-building space, declined the Tableau-related 120,000-square-foot fit-out and paused the fourth-building plans.
- July 31, 2025: King County’s commercial assessment report recorded the South building’s shell and core as 100% complete, the overall project at approximately 80% complete and no tenant improvements in place. See the King County report.
- March–June 2026: Kirkland’s major-project list still classified “Kirkland Urban South Mixed Use” as under construction. A permit record also references tenant-improvement and office-buildout work. Those records demonstrate activity, not a confirmed return to Google’s complete original plan.
What the 2026 records do—and do not—prove
The city’s March 31, 2026 project list and a MyBuildingPermit record indicate continuing construction or fit-out work in Kirkland Urban. A project can remain under construction because of developer work, common areas or another tenant’s improvements. Likewise, a tenant-improvement permit does not identify the final user or establish that Google occupied the whole South building.
As of the available evidence through August 18, 2026, no source confirms that Google fully resumed its interior program, completed the East building or restored the four-building schedule.

Why Google’s decision mattered in the Seattle-area market
The pause occurred during a sharp but uneven office-market adjustment. Kidder Mathews data cited by GeekWire put Seattle-region office vacancy at 15.1% in the first quarter of 2024, up from 13.9% at the end of 2023, with nine consecutive quarters of negative net absorption. Seattle proper was reported at 18.35% vacancy, compared with roughly 6% before the pandemic. The figures are summarized in GeekWire’s market coverage.
Hybrid work, technology-sector layoffs, cost controls and uncertainty about future utilization all reduced demand for some offices. They did not affect every company equally: the same reporting cited large Bellevue leases by ByteDance and The Pokémon Company, while Amazon continued expanding in Bellevue. The useful conclusion is selective retrenchment, not a universal freeze.

Google was reported to employ more than 7,200 people in the Puget Sound region in 2022, with offices in Kirkland, Fremont and South Lake Union. That is a historical figure, not a verified 2026 headcount. The available sources also do not establish a relocation, closure, layoff or employee-reassignment plan tied specifically to the Kirkland Urban pause.

Google’s withdrawal from a proposed campus at the former Lee Johnson auto-dealership site was a different decision. In 2023, the company stopped pursuing the roughly 1.5-million-square-foot project, which had been associated with as many as 6,000 employees, according to GeekWire.

That site was near the NE 85th Street corridor and had been viewed as a potential catalyst for housing, jobs, transit-oriented development and commercial activity. It should not be combined with the Kirkland Urban story: Lee Johnson was a proposed new campus, while Kirkland Urban involved unfinished interiors and a paused fourth building within an existing mixed-use development.
What is known and what remains unknown
Established by the available record
- Google planned a four-building Kirkland Urban campus of approximately 760,000 square feet.

Bottom line
Google’s Kirkland Urban expansion pause was real, but it was narrower and less final than “Google abandoned Kirkland.” The strongest later evidence shows the South building still lacked tenant improvements in July 2025, while 2026 records show limited or continuing activity without confirming a full restart. The East building’s status remains unresolved: “paused,” “delayed” or “not confirmed” is supported; “canceled” is not.
