Google’s Famous “Blender” Interview Question: Is “Jump Out” Correct?

The famous Google blender question was real—but “jump out” is only correct under simplified physics. Here is the history, science and best interview response.

Short answer: jumping out is a defensible answer under an idealized physics model, but it is not a universally proven solution. A person scaled down while preserving ordinary muscle function could have a much better strength-to-weight ratio. A biologically realistic shrunken human, however, raises unanswered questions about muscles, organs, timing, air resistance and survival on landing.

The question was historically reported as a Google interview brainteaser, then popularized by William Poundstone’s 2012 book and the 2013 film The Internship. Google later publicly moved away from classic brainteasers because they were poor predictors of job performance. There is also no public evidence that “no one” ever answered the blender question correctly.

The question Google supposedly asked

“You are shrunk to the height of a nickel and your mass is proportionally reduced to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blades will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?”

That is the commonly repeated version. Published accounts vary: some say “the size of a nickel,” others say “the height of a nickel”; some say you are dropped rather than thrown; and the countdown has appeared as both 30 and 60 seconds. Some versions also leave out whether the blender has a lid.

  • ON-THE-GO CONVENIENCE: Blend directly in the 16-oz. single-serve cup, attach the spout lid, and enjoy your creations wherever your day takes you

Those details are not cosmetic. The best escape depends on the blender’s height, the distance from the blades to the rim, the blade design, whether the lid is fitted, whether the motor is accessible and what objects—if any—are available. The premise also does not explain how a human body is physically shrunk.

Is “jump out” the correct answer?

It is the standard answer from simplified scaling physics, not an official or scientifically settled answer.

The argument relies on the square-cube law. If every linear dimension of a person is multiplied by a scale factor s:

  • length scales as s;
  • muscle cross-sectional area, and therefore a rough measure of muscle force, scales as s2;
  • volume and mass scale as s3.

Consequently, the simplified force-to-weight ratio scales approximately as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

s2 ÷ s3 = 1 ÷ s

As the body gets smaller, its mass falls faster than its muscle cross-sectional area. If the person were scaled down to about 1% of their original height while retaining the same kind of muscle operation, the model would predict an approximately 100-fold improvement in theoretical muscle force relative to body weight.

That does not mean the person automatically jumps 100 times higher. The legs are also shorter, the muscles must contract over a shorter distance, takeoff timing changes, and energy must be transferred to the body through an actual movement. Still, under the idealized model, a nickel-sized person may be able to jump many times their own height—potentially enough to clear a household blender.

In a 2025 analysis, Veritasium modeled a roughly 2-centimeter-tall person in a blender approximately 30 centimeters high. Its simplified calculation produced a jump of about 42 centimeters, or about 39 centimeters after an idealized adjustment for air resistance. Those are outputs of that particular model, not a universally accepted measurement for a physically resized human.

Why the physics is more complicated than the slogan

Strength-to-weight ratio is not the same as jump height

A jump begins with a person applying force to the floor. What determines takeoff speed is the net vertical impulse: force applied over time. Peak force alone is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Research on human vertical jumping found a strong relationship between relative net vertical impulse and jump height, while peak force was a weaker predictor. That matters here because a miniature person could have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio but still face limits on how quickly the legs can extend and how much useful impulse they can deliver. A review of jumping across body sizes by biomechanics researcher Robert McNeill Alexander likewise emphasizes muscle force, shortening speed, leg length, compliance and technique—not just body mass.

In other words, “smaller means stronger relative to weight” supports trying to jump. It does not, by itself, calculate a guaranteed jump trajectory.

Air resistance becomes relatively more important

Frontal area decreases with length squared, while mass decreases with length cubed. The result is that a tiny body has more area relative to its mass. Air drag can therefore have a much greater effect on its motion than it does on a full-sized human, particularly if the person tumbles or spreads out during the jump.

This is why the Veritasium model’s air-resistance adjustment reduced the predicted jump. The size of that adjustment depends on body shape, orientation, launch speed and the surrounding air; it is not a universal correction.

Landing is part of the escape

Clearing the rim is not necessarily the same as surviving. A predicted 40-centimeter jump from a 2-centimeter body is roughly 20 body lengths. Gravity would still act normally, and the person would have to absorb the landing energy. Air drag might reduce the impact speed, but whether bones, joints and organs could tolerate the landing is another unspecified biological question.

The shrinking mechanism is undefined

The question says that mass is reduced to preserve the original density. It does not say whether:

  • the atoms become smaller;
  • the person consists of fewer cells;
  • individual cells shrink;
  • organs and blood vessels scale geometrically; or
  • some supernatural rule simply makes a normally functioning miniature human.

A human is not a uniform block that can be resized without consequences. Cell structure, the heart’s ability to circulate blood, lung and airway geometry, oxygen exchange, nerve function, muscle contraction and coordination could all change. The square-cube law applies most cleanly to geometrically similar physical structures; it does not guarantee that a complete biological system continues to work after scaling.

Other proposed escape plans

The question is open-ended, so several answers can be reasonable if their assumptions are explained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Proposed answer Why it might work Important limitation
Jump out Uses the improved theoretical strength-to-weight ratio predicted by geometric scaling. Assumes the miniature body remains functional and that the blender is open above the person.
Jam or break the motor Uses the 30- or 60-second delay rather than relying on a jump. The classic wording does not say the motor is exposed or reachable. The answer also requires knowing the blender’s construction.
Stay near the blade’s axis A person close to the center might avoid the fastest-moving outer portion of the blade. It may delay injury but does not provide a reliable way out, and the blade geometry and speed are unspecified.
Climb the glass wall Small bodies have a relatively favorable surface-area-to-mass ratio, which can help with friction or adhesion. Humans do not have the specialized pads, claws or adhesion mechanisms of geckos and climbing insects. Smooth glass is a particularly poor assumption for ordinary friction.
Use clothing as a rope or loop Clothing could provide extra reach or a way to gain leverage at the rim. There must be a suitable anchor point, and the fabric must be strong enough. The question does not specify clothing or an anchor.
Use a rubber band or spring An elastic object could store energy over time and release it quickly, reducing the demand on miniature muscles to generate all the impulse directly. No elastic object is guaranteed to be present. This has appeared in secondary commentary, not as a verified official Google answer.
Ask for clarification Correctly identifies that the scenario is underdefined. In an interview, clarification should be followed by a useful set of assumptions and a proposed course of action.
Wait or say the premise is impossible These answers point out that the shrinking process and the required action are not fully specified. They can sound evasive or overly literal unless followed by a reasoned analysis.

The frequently repeated answer “throw something into the motor” should therefore be treated as one old proposed solution, not as a demonstrated escape plan. The question says the blender is empty, but it does not state that the motor housing is accessible.

What historical sources actually establish

The blender scenario was not invented solely for The Internship. It appeared in older published lists and accounts of questions associated with Google interviews. It was later popularized by Poundstone’s Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?, published in 2012, and by the 2013 movie.

That history needs careful wording. The publicly available evidence shows that the question was reported as a Google-style or Google interview question. It does not establish that Google asked every candidate, used it for every role or maintained a single official answer. The question has been reproduced in sources including IFLScience’s historical question list, a reproduction of Poundstone-related material, and another published compilation of technology-company interview questions.

Nor is the headline claim that “no one answers it correctly” supported by public data. There is no disclosed dataset showing how many candidates received the question, what they answered or how interviewers scored them. Because the wording varies and the premise is open-ended, “correct” is itself difficult to define. Older answer compilations generally present possible approaches rather than evidence of one experimentally verified solution.

What the interviewer was probably testing

Historical reporting about Google’s interview culture emphasized the candidate’s reasoning and explanation. For a question like this, an interviewer could observe whether a candidate:

  1. notices missing information;
  2. states assumptions instead of quietly inventing them;
  3. breaks an unusual problem into manageable parts;
  4. uses an appropriate quantitative principle;
  5. generates more than one possible plan;
  6. recognizes weaknesses in the first idea; and
  7. communicates a decision clearly under uncertainty.

That is different from hunting for a magic phrase such as “jump” or “break the motor.” A candidate who says “jump” and explains the square-cube law, the lid assumption and the biological caveat is demonstrating much more than someone who guesses a memorized answer.

Does Google still ask questions like this?

Google publicly moved away from classic brainteasers around 2013. Google spokesperson Jenna Wandres told ABC News that the company had shifted away from difficult brainteasers because candidates disliked them, answers leaked and evidence that they predicted future performance or IQ was questionable and inconsistent. Laszlo Bock, then Google’s senior vice president of People Operations, described such questions as a “complete waste of time” because they did not predict job performance.

Google’s later public interview guidance placed more emphasis on structured interviews and work-sample-style technical evaluation. A Google Student Blog explanation described the company’s effort to use formats with better evidence of predictive value. A Google Careers interview-preparation guide says hypothetical questions should assess thought processes in role-relevant situations and states, “We don’t use brain teasers.”

This does not prove that no Google interviewer has ever asked an unusual hypothetical question since then. Teams, roles and interview formats can differ. It does mean the famous blender puzzle should be understood as part of an older interview culture, not as a reliable description of Google’s standard hiring process today.

The strongest answer if you are asked a similar question

A good response should be decisive without pretending that the science is more certain than it is:

“I’d first clarify whether this is an idealized physics problem or whether real biology has to remain intact. Under geometric scaling, mass decreases with volume while muscle force decreases with cross-sectional area, so my strength-to-weight ratio should improve and I would try to jump out—assuming the blender is open. If the body must remain biologically realistic, there is no unique answer because the question does not specify how the heart, lungs, cells and muscles scale. If I find a rubber band or spring, I would also consider using it to store energy and launch myself. I’d state those assumptions and compare the options rather than claim there is one guaranteed solution.”

If the interviewer wants more detail, ask targeted questions: Is the lid on? How tall and wide is the blender? Are the motor and blade assembly accessible? Is the goal to avoid the blades, escape the container or remain alive? Are any objects available? Then choose a model and explain what would change if an assumption changes.

The point is not to spend the entire interview litigating an impossible premise. It is to show a disciplined process: clarify, model, act, test the model’s weaknesses and communicate the decision.

Why recent coverage gives conflicting answers

Recent articles have revived the puzzle with competing explanations. A March 5, 2025 Daily Galaxy article attributes a 10-to-15-centimeter jump estimate to Professor Gregory Sutton and discusses a spring or rubber-band solution. That article does not provide a primary paper, calculation, interview transcript or independently checkable source for those specific figures, so the numbers should be treated as an attributed proposal rather than settled science.

The disagreement is understandable. One model emphasizes the square-cube advantage; another emphasizes the shorter time and distance available for miniature legs to extend and transfer energy. Both are reminders that “relative strength” is only one input. The answer changes depending on whether the thought experiment preserves muscle properties, contraction speed, elastic structures, air drag, body orientation, biological function and the dimensions of the blender.

Bottom line

“Jump out” is a sensible first answer under idealized geometric scaling, and it may be physically plausible in a carefully chosen model. It is not a universal law for a real shrunken human. The question was historically reported as a Google interview brainteaser, but there is no verified secret answer and no evidence that nobody solved it. The most impressive response is to state assumptions, explain the square-cube argument, acknowledge biology and impulse, consider alternatives and make a practical choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the blender question really asked by Google?

It was historically reported in published accounts and question lists associated with Google, including material popularized by William Poundstone. That does not prove Google asked every candidate, used it for every role or had one official answer. The film The Internship helped popularize a question that was already circulating.

Why might a tiny person be able to jump out?

Under idealized geometric scaling, muscle force is associated with cross-sectional area, which scales with length squared, while body mass scales with volume, or length cubed. The resulting strength-to-weight ratio improves as the person becomes smaller. That supports the jump answer, but it does not settle questions about impulse, contraction timing, air resistance or biology.

What if the blender has a lid?

Then jumping out may not work, regardless of the person’s theoretical jumping ability. The lid is one of the question’s unstated assumptions, which is why a strong interview response would ask for clarification before committing to a plan.

Does Google still use brainteasers in interviews?

Google publicly moved away from classic brainteasers around 2013 and later published guidance emphasizing structured, role-relevant evaluation. That is a company-level public position, not proof that no unusual hypothetical can ever appear in any team or role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The best answer is conditional: jump if the question assumes an idealized, functioning miniature human and an open blender; otherwise, explain why the outcome is underdetermined. The real interview skill is disciplined reasoning, not guessing a supposedly secret solution.
