The feature was selective, not an ad on every AI-generated answer. By August 2026, Google’s documentation described three possible positions—above, below, or within an AI Overview—with in-overview ads available in English on mobile and desktop across a defined group of countries.
What Google announced in October 2024
Google said it was moving from tests to a U.S. rollout of ads within AI Overviews. The ads were intended to connect people with products and businesses while they explored an AI-generated answer, and were marked “Sponsored.” The original announcement covered relevant queries on mobile devices, not a worldwide launch. Contemporaneous coverage also described Google’s claims that AI Overview users searched more often, reported greater satisfaction, and that redesigned links increased traffic to supporting sites. Those are Google-reported results, not independent findings.
Google also announced more prominent links to supporting websites and AI-organized result pages for selected mobile searches. Those organic links and the paid placements are separate systems.
Where an ad can appear
| Position | What it means | Current eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| Above an AI Overview | A conventional ad appears before the generated summary. | Eligible in all 200-plus markets where AI Overviews are available, subject to auction and policy rules. |
| Below an AI Overview | A conventional ad appears after the generated summary. | Eligible in the same broad AI Overview markets, subject to auction and policy rules. |
| Within an AI Overview | The sponsored result is integrated into the overview’s surrounding content and recommendations, with ad labeling. | Available in English on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States. |
Google does not say that every AI Overview contains an ad. An ad requires a suitable commercial context, an eligible and relevant ad, and a successful auction.

Matching is not limited to the exact words in the search box. Google says it can consider the original query together with the AI Overview’s content, inferred intent, ad relevance, quality and auction eligibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
An informational question can still lead to a product ad
Google’s example is a person asking why a swimming pool is green and how to clean it. Although the question is informational, an overview discussing pool cleaning and vacuuming may create a relevant opportunity for a pool-vacuum ad. The commercial recommendation is therefore based on the combined context, not proof that the user explicitly searched to buy something.
What the system does not guarantee
- An ad will appear for every query.
- An advertiser can choose the exact overview in which its ad appears.
- The generated explanation is accurate merely because an ad was matched to it.
Which advertisers can participate
Google’s current help documentation lists existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns as potentially eligible. Text and Shopping ads are currently eligible for placement within AI Overviews. It does not describe a separate “AI Overview campaign” or mandatory add-on.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- Search: Broad match, AI Max for Search or other keyword-expansion features can help discover varied queries, while Smart Bidding optimizes toward the advertiser’s selected goals.
- Shopping: Product feeds and accurate product landing pages are important when Google evaluates a product ad against the overview’s context.
- Performance Max: Google automates targeting and distribution across eligible inventory, trading granular placement control for reach.
Eligibility is not placement. Ads must still satisfy Google’s relevance, quality, policy and auction requirements. Businesses can start at Google Ads; costs are auction-based rather than a fixed subscription or special AI Overview fee.

Restrictions and sensitive categories
Google says ads within AI Overviews are not currently shown for sensitive verticals including adult content, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare and politics, along with other categories covered by its policies. This restriction applies to the cited in-overview placement; it should not be read as a blanket ban on every Google Ads placement. Policy categories and eligibility can change.

What this means for advertisers
Potential upside
- Reach people earlier, while they are exploring a problem rather than typing an explicit purchase query.
- Use query and overview context to match products or services to more conversational needs.
- Participate through existing campaigns instead of buying a dedicated AI Overview unit.
Trade-offs
- Google controls the auction and much of the contextual matching; advertisers do not write or select the AI Overview.
- Broad match, keywordless targeting and Performance Max can expand reach while reducing direct query-level control.
- Google says reporting for this experience is still evolving, so granular placement and incremental-performance analysis may be limited.
- Weak conversion tracking, inaccurate feeds or a landing page that does not meet the user’s intent can make automated expansion expensive.
Businesses should evaluate AI Overview exposure using account-level conversion data and controlled budget changes, not universal claims about cost per click or conversion-rate lifts. Google’s documentation supplies no universal AI Overview price or placement rate.
What this means for users and publishers
Users
A sponsored recommendation may appear while the original question is still informational. That can be useful when someone wants a next step, but it also places paid material beside an answer that may feel editorial. Because AI Overviews can contain errors or omissions, relevance to the overview does not establish that the recommendation—or the premise—is correct. Look for the “Sponsored” label and verify important claims independently.
Publishers
When Google answers more of a question on its results page, some users may have less reason to visit the cited source. Google has claimed that redesigned links increased supporting-site traffic, but that claim is not settled independent evidence. A 2026 paper on AI Overview citations and publisher impact raised concerns about traffic-based monetization and the fact that many cited pages also carry display advertising; it did not prove a universal traffic decline. Read the paper.
Do not confuse AI Overviews with AI Mode
AI Overviews are generated summaries embedded in a conventional Search results page. AI Mode is a more conversational, AI-centered Search experience. Google is testing newer ad formats in AI Mode, including formats powered by Gemini, AI Max and Performance Max, but those tests are not the same placement as established ads above, below or within AI Overviews. Google’s AI Mode announcement describes that separate work.
Common misconceptions
- “Every AI Overview has an ad.” No. Google says ads require an eligible query and relevant available inventory.
- “The October 2024 rollout was worldwide.” No. It began with relevant U.S. mobile searches.
- “Advertisers buy an AI Overview directly.” No separate campaign or guaranteed placement is documented.
- “Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are identical.” They are separate experiences and formats.
- “A company can pay for organic citation in an overview.” The documented paid ads and separately generated overview citations are not the same thing.
Bottom line for a business considering Google Ads
Google has turned AI Overviews into another conditional commercial surface. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns may become eligible, but placement depends on Google’s auction, inferred intent, overview context, quality and policy rules. The opportunity is earlier discovery; the cost is less placement control and still-evolving measurement. Treat in-overview ads as an extension of an accountable campaign—not as guaranteed access to AI answers.
