Google confirmed a voluntary exit program on January 30, 2025, for U.S.-based employees in its Platforms & Devices organization. Eligible employees could leave with severance. The offer covered far more than Android and Pixel, and it was not a company-wide buyout. In April 2025, Google later confirmed job reductions in the same division; reporting described them as affecting “hundreds,” but the exact number and any connection to the voluntary departures were not disclosed.
What Google announced
On January 30, 2025, Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president overseeing Platforms & Devices, announced a voluntary exit program for U.S.-based employees in the organization. Google described an option to leave with a severance package. The company’s stated rationale focused on commitment to the combined organization and building products with greater speed and efficiency, as reported by TechCrunch.
This was a voluntary-severance offer, not an immediate involuntary layoff. It was also not a company-wide program: the reported scope was employees in Platforms & Devices in the United States, rather than Google staff generally or employees worldwide.
Which teams and products were in scope?
The offer applied to the broad Platforms & Devices organization, not only to Android and Pixel. 9to5Google’s report described its product reach as including:

The reports did not identify every eligible job, team or level, so inclusion in a product area does not establish that every employee working on it qualified.
Why the offer followed a reorganization
In April 2024, Google combined its Devices & Services and Platforms & Ecosystems organizations into Platforms & Devices. It also moved in research teams focused on computational photography and on-device intelligence. Google said the structure would bring hardware, software and AI work closer together and improve coordination and decision-making. The January offer came after that consolidation. Reporting described employee concerns about roles and alignment in the merged organization, as well as hybrid-work expectations. Those concerns provide context, but they are not the same as Google’s public explanation for the program.
Does this mean Google was ending Android or Pixel?
No product cancellation or roadmap change was announced as part of the voluntary-exit program. The workforce offer alone does not show that Google was abandoning Android, Pixel or another product. Google’s April 2024 announcement described Android and Pixel as active parts of its strategy, and 9to5Google reported no accompanying roadmap changes when the offer was announced.

What happened after the voluntary offer?
In April 2025, 9to5Google reported that Google had laid off “hundreds” of employees in Platforms & Devices, citing The Information. The later reductions make the January offer part of a wider restructuring story, but the available reporting does not establish how many employees accepted severance, whether the layoffs were planned as a follow-on to the offer, or whether the two affected the same teams. It does not show that employees who declined the voluntary package were later selected for layoffs.
