In March 2024, Google Search was reported to have added a result card showing the balance of a public Bitcoin address. The card displayed native BTC and an update marker, but reports said the figure was based on the last external transaction—not an instantaneous, banking-style balance. Current availability has not been established, so the feature is best described as a 2024 launch rather than something guaranteed to work today.
What Google’s Bitcoin lookup showed
Contemporaneous reports dated March 28–29, 2024, attributed the expansion to a March 27 announcement by Google VP of Engineering Rajan Patel. A user could enter a public Bitcoin address in Search and receive a result card with its Bitcoin balance and a last-update indication. The Block reported that the balance reflected native BTC “as of the last external transaction,” so it should not be described as real-time. The Block’s report and CoinDesk’s coverage describe the rollout.
Which addresses and networks were included
Reports described Bitcoin support alongside five EVM networks: Arbitrum, Avalanche, Fantom, Optimism, and Polygon. Google had already supported Ethereum-address balance lookups, according to the same contemporaneous coverage. For Bitcoin, reported address formats were P2PKH, P2SH, and Bech32; extended public keys were reported as unsupported. The format limitations were reported by Cointelegraph.
An address balance is not a whole-wallet balance
The lookup concerned a public Bitcoin address, not necessarily every address a wallet manages or all funds controlled by one person. A wallet can manage multiple addresses, so a single address result should not be treated as a complete portfolio view. It also does not identify who controls the address.

Why the lookup is possible—and what it cannot do
Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger, which makes address-level balances and transaction history observable. Google’s reported feature surfaced blockchain-derived information, but the reports do not establish whether Google operated nodes, crawled every block, relied on a data provider, or maintained a complete internal blockchain index. Bitcoin.org’s explanation of how Bitcoin works describes the public transaction record.
Seeing an address balance does not provide access to its funds. Spending requires the corresponding private key. A balance lookup needs only a public address; never enter a seed phrase, recovery phrase, or private key into Google, a blockchain explorer, a form, or a support chat. What this means for privacy
Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not inherently anonymous: an address is not automatically a person’s name, but its transaction history is public and may become associated with someone through context. If an address has been published or linked to a person elsewhere, making its balance easier to look up can lower the effort needed to inspect public on-chain activity. The feature did not make Bitcoin transactions public; the ledger was already public. Bitcoin.org cautions that publishing an address can expose its transaction history in its privacy guidance.

The available reporting documents the March 2024 launch, but does not establish that the result card remains available globally today. Availability may vary by time or Search experience; check Google Search directly using only a public address if you want to see whether a result appears in your region. Do not use an address whose activity you do not want to make easier to inspect.
