Use Google’s review link when a customer can tap or click a digital message; use its QR code when a customer is in person and can scan a printed display. Google provides both through Business Profile, and its guidance does not show that either format earns more reviews.
Choose the format that fits the customer’s situation
| Customer touchpoint | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Thank-you email, chat, or digital receipt | Review link | The customer can open the request directly from the message. Google lists these as places to share the link. |
| In-store counter or another printed touchpoint | QR code | A customer who is physically present can scan the displayed code. Google suggests printing and displaying it in-store. |
| You need to create the QR image while away from a computer | Neither yet | Google’s instructions say QR codes are generated in a computer browser, not on mobile. Create and save the image from a computer first. |
This is a practical channel choice, not a performance ranking. Google’s published guidance does not provide a conversion-rate comparison or establish that one format produces more reviews.
Get the Google review link or QR code
- Open your Google Business Profile in a computer browser.
- Select Read Reviews, then Get more reviews.
- For digital requests, copy the review link and add it to a suitable message or digital receipt.
- For an in-person display, use Google’s QR code option. Right-click the QR image and choose Save image as to download it. Google also provides sharing options.
Google describes email, WhatsApp messages, and Facebook posts as possible ways to ask customers for reviews. A printed sign or holder is optional: it can display the downloaded QR image, but it is not needed to create either sharing format.
Set expectations for customers and follow Google’s policy
Customers must be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review, but that account does not need a Gmail address. Review availability depends on the customer’s country or region and the business category, and Google says availability may change.
#1 Best Overall
Ask for feedback on the basis of a genuine customer experience, whether the request is a link or QR code. Google Business Profile Help states: “Reviews and other user contributions to Google Maps must reflect a genuine experience.” Do not offer free or discounted goods or services in exchange for posting a review, changing one, or removing a negative review.
Google says reviews appear alongside Business Profiles in Search and Maps. Its guidance recommends inviting customers to review, replying to reviews, and valuing honest, balanced feedback.
