Google plans to bring its Seattle employees together at its South Lake Union campus and eventually leave its longtime Fremont campus. The company confirmed the plan on Feb. 28, 2025, citing collaboration and community. It did not announce a completion date, and 2026 reporting still described the Fremont departure as pending.
What Google announced
Google said it intends to consolidate its Seattle employees at its South Lake Union campus and eventually exit its Fremont campus. The announcement was about the company’s Seattle offices, not a stated plan to leave the region.
Google spokesperson Ryan Lamont told GeekWire, “We remain committed to our long-term presence in Seattle.” He also said the company was “focused on investing in real estate efficiently to meet the current and future needs of our hybrid workforce.” Both excerpts appeared in GeekWire’s Feb. 28, 2025 report of an emailed statement. GeekWire’s report attributed the move to better collaboration and community.
When will Google leave Fremont?
Google did not give a specific schedule when it confirmed the plan. A 2026 GeekWire report continued to describe the Fremont exit as pending and the consolidation as in progress, without providing a completion date. Employees’ final move date and the date Google will finish leaving Fremont therefore remain unreported. GeekWire’s 2026 coverage

What the reported office-space figures mean
Two publications have reported different figures for Google’s Fremont space, and they should not be treated as interchangeable measurements:
| Report | Figure and context |
|---|---|
| GeekWire, reporting on the campus in 2018 | 190,000 square feet, describing the Google Fremont campus. |
| Puget Sound Business Journal, Feb. 28, 2025 | Nearly 300,000 square feet associated with the space Google would leave; this is the publication’s reported estimate. |
The figures refer to different reporting and descriptions; the available coverage does not explain the difference. GeekWire’s 2018 coverage and Puget Sound Business Journal’s report

Does the plan include Google’s Kirkland hub?
The reported plan concerns Google’s Seattle offices. Contemporaneous reporting said the company’s separate major engineering hub in Kirkland did not appear to be affected. That distinction matters: an exit from the Fremont campus is not evidence of a broader withdrawal from the Seattle area or Kirkland.
