Google launched Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026, as an update to Nano Banana 2, its Gemini image-generation and editing model. Google reports stronger results on several evaluations, while launch coverage puts standard API image-output prices at about half the previous model’s for the compared 1K and 4K sizes. Those claims have limits: the performance figures come from Google’s own model card, and the price comparison is for API image output—not Gemini app subscriptions or the full cost of every API request.
What is Nano Banana 2.1?
Nano Banana 2.1 is Google’s model for generating images and editing them through conversational instructions. Google’s developer documentation describes it as an update to Nano Banana 2; the model card identifies it as based on Gemini 3.6 Flash. It retains the Flash line’s emphasis on speed and cost efficiency, according to Google.
The model is intended for both text-to-image creation and editing workflows, including multi-turn edits. Cloud documentation lists a 131,072-token context window, a maximum output of 32,768 tokens, and support for image outputs at 1K, 2K, and 4K resolution. It can take up to 14 images in a prompt and supports unusually wide or tall ratios, including 1:4, 4:1, 1:8, and 8:1.
What changed in Nano Banana 2.1?
Image quality, text and layout
Google highlights improved visual quality and realism at 1K, 2K, and 4K, with 1K as the default output. It also says text rendering and infographic layout accuracy have improved. The model card’s reported evaluations show gains in infographic design and factuality compared with Nano Banana 2, though generated visual material still needs fact-checking.

Editing, references and wide images
The model supports combining up to 14 reference images, which can help guide a generation or edit using multiple visual inputs. Google also says it fixed tiling artifacts for specified wide and panoramic aspect ratios at 2K and 4K. Editing features include multi-turn image editing and masked editing; the model card cautions that following an edit instruction or preserving ink and other details inside a mask can be imperfect.
Adjustable Thinking
Google’s API documentation lists three Thinking settings: minimal, medium (the default), and high. The setting may affect how the model handles a task; benchmark scores quoted below are explicitly tied to the Thinking or No Thinking condition and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Is Nano Banana 2.1 better than Nano Banana 2?
Google DeepMind’s model card reports higher results for Nano Banana 2.1 Thinking than Nano Banana 2 Thinking across the listed text-to-image and editing evaluations. These are Google’s own results, current as of October 2026—not an independent side-by-side review. The Overall Preference figures are benchmark scores, not percentages of users who prefer a model.
| Evaluation | Nano Banana 2.1 | Nano Banana 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Overall Preference, Thinking | 1050 ± 14 | 990 ± 7 |
| Infographic Design, Thinking | 1048 ± 17 | 961 ± 12 |
| Infographic Factuality, Thinking | 0.521 | 0.179 |
| General Editing, Thinking | 1026 ± 12 | 938 ± 11 |
| Multi-Character Consistency, Thinking | 1106 ± 14 | 978 ± 10 |
For context, the model card lists Nano Banana Pro at 935 ± 8 for Overall Preference and 0.265 for Infographic Factuality. These comparisons do not establish which model will work better for every prompt, editing task, resolution, or product interface. The source set contains no independent controlled comparison.

At the standard developer API image-output prices reported by Decrypt on October 6, 2026, the 1K output price is $0.0336 for Nano Banana 2.1 versus $0.067 for Nano Banana 2; at 4K, it is $0.0756 versus $0.151. Those paired output prices are approximately half the previous model’s price at the compared resolutions.

Where can you use Nano Banana 2.1?
Google’s model card names the Gemini App, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Search AI Mode, Google Ads, Google Flow, and Google Stitch as distribution channels. For Google Cloud Agent Platform, documentation lists the stable model ID as gemini-nano-banana-2.1, a release date of October 6, 2026, and launch stage GA; it describes global availability for that platform access. Channel availability can vary, so the list should not be read as a guarantee that every service is available to every user or in every region.
Cloud documentation lists standard pay-as-you-go access and batch inference, as well as image editing, multi-turn editing, and Google Search and Image Search grounding. Developers choosing an access route should check the current terms, availability, and pricing for that particular product.

What are the limitations?
Google’s model card warns that Nano Banana 2.1 can hallucinate, run slowly, or time out. Small text may remain blurry, especially at 1K; long paragraphs and page-length text are difficult. Character consistency is not perfect, and the model can partially follow instructions or struggle to preserve details in masked edits. Some edits may retain the original pose, while left/right directions and other spatial references can be confused. Google also says advanced world knowledge, 3D reasoning, and factuality remain limited.
A stronger infographic factuality score is not a guarantee that a generated chart, label, or other factual image is correct. Verify names, figures, and claims against dependable sources before using generated visuals to inform decisions or publish factual material.
How to judge whether the upgrade is worth it
- For API users focused on output cost: the reported 1K and 4K output prices favor 2.1, but confirm current Google pricing and account for input and Thinking-token charges in your own workload.
- For design and editing: Google’s evaluations indicate gains in infographic design, general editing, and multi-character consistency. Test the model on representative prompts and edits before relying on those gains for production work.
- For text-heavy images: improved text rendering is a stated change, not a promise of legible long-form copy. Inspect text at the final output size and proofread every generated label.
- For app users: API output pricing does not tell you whether a consumer subscription or a particular Google product offers better value. Check availability and terms in the specific product you use.
Google’s launch statement, quoted in Decrypt’s October 6, 2026 report, said: “This upgraded version outperforms our previous models across the board, with notable leaps in visual design, mask-based editing, and subject consistency to help you create more natural-looking images.” That is Google’s characterization; the model-card scores provide company-reported evidence for selected evaluations, not independent confirmation of performance across the board.
