Google has completed its acquisition of Wiz. The deal was announced on March 18, 2025, at an all-cash value of $32 billion, but it did not close until March 11, 2026. Alphabet later reported a preliminary purchase price of $29.467 billion—about $29.5 billion after purchase-price adjustments and excluding certain post-combination compensation arrangements.

Wiz is now part of Google Cloud, although Google says it will retain the Wiz brand and continue supporting customers across multiple clouds. The acquisition could strengthen Google Cloud’s security business, but customers should not assume that pricing, product neutrality, or integrations will remain unchanged.

The deal in brief

  • Announcement: March 18, 2025
  • Announced value: $32 billion in cash, subject to closing adjustments
  • Completion: March 11, 2026
  • New owner: Google Cloud
  • Brand: Google says Wiz will remain a distinct brand
  • Reported preliminary purchase price: $29.467 billion, or approximately $29.5 billion after adjustments

Google’s original announcement made clear that regulatory approvals, closing conditions, integration, and the ability to realize expected benefits were not guaranteed before completion. Those conditions have now been overcome, but the larger business and customer questions are only beginning. Google’s announcement and post-close statement provide the company’s account of the transaction.

Reports in July 2024 indicated that Google had previously pursued Wiz at a lower valuation, but that approach did not close. The completed transaction is therefore best understood as a renewed strategic bet, not a deal that has been pending since 2024.

What Wiz actually does

Wiz is more than a vulnerability scanner. Its cloud and AI security platform is designed to build an inventory of cloud assets, identify weaknesses, and connect separate findings into a picture of exploitable or business-relevant risk.

Its capability areas include:

  • Cloud asset discovery and configuration monitoring
  • Cloud security posture management
  • Vulnerability and exposure management
  • Attack-path analysis and risk prioritization
  • Correlation of identity, secrets, network, workload, and data risks
  • Infrastructure-as-code and software-development security through Wiz Code
  • Runtime and threat-detection capabilities through Wiz Defend and Wiz Sensor
  • Compliance and policy monitoring
  • Agentless assessment where applicable

The platform’s graph-based approach is important because a list of isolated vulnerabilities is often less useful than knowing which combination of an exposed asset, excessive identity privilege, vulnerable workload, or leaked secret creates a realistic path to impact.

Wiz presents its commercial offering as modular. Its public pricing page describes products including Wiz Cloud, Wiz Code, Wiz Defend, Wiz Sensor, and Wiz Go. Licensing can depend on factors such as workloads, active developers, log ingestion, and sensors. Wiz generally requires a custom quote, while selected AWS Marketplace listings provide contract-specific examples rather than universal list prices. Wiz pricing information should therefore be treated as a starting point, not a price promise.

Wiz does not automatically replace identity governance, patching, secure architecture, incident response, logging, or clear remediation ownership. Its main value is visibility, context, prioritization, and workflow.

Why Google paid so much

The $32 billion announcement was the largest acquisition Google had announced. Alphabet’s later filing recorded approximately $22.689 billion in goodwill and $8.3 billion in acquired intangible assets, including developed technology, customer relationships, patents, trade names, and other assets. The filing says the goodwill was primarily associated with expected synergies; that accounting attribution is not proof that the synergies will occur. Alphabet’s SEC filing reports the purchase-price details.

Google appears to be buying several assets at once:

  • Multicloud distribution: Wiz can be relevant even when a customer’s primary infrastructure is AWS, Azure, Oracle Cloud, or on-premises.
  • Security budgets: Security spending can create an additional entry point for Google Cloud sales teams.
  • Enterprise relationships: Wiz brings an established cloud-security customer base and security decision-maker relationships.
  • Product velocity and talent: Google is acquiring a cloud-native security platform and the people behind it.
  • AI-security positioning: As companies deploy AI applications and models, they need controls around data, identities, model interactions, infrastructure, and runtime behavior.

The price reflects the scarcity value of an independent cloud-security company with broad cloud coverage and strategic importance—not simply the cost of its software code.

What Google is combining with Wiz

Google says it intends to combine Wiz’s Cloud and AI Security Platform with:

  • Google Threat Intelligence
  • Google Security Operations
  • Gemini-related and other AI capabilities
  • Mandiant consulting expertise
  • Security controls across development, build, runtime, and incident response
  • Threat intelligence, threat hunting, testing, and validation

The stated goal is an AI-powered platform that can detect, prevent, and respond to threats across cloud, hybrid, on-premises, and AI environments. That is Google’s product direction, not evidence that every integration is already generally available or fully unified.

For Google Cloud, the combination could improve its enterprise security story, create more cross-selling opportunities, and connect cloud posture management with security operations, threat intelligence, and Mandiant response services. It could also help Google sell security to customers that are deliberately using more than one infrastructure provider.

Will Wiz remain multicloud?

Google says Wiz products will continue to support Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud Platform, hybrid infrastructure, on-premises environments, packaged applications, and SaaS applications. Google also says it will continue partnering with other cloud-security providers and distributing Wiz through partners, system integrators, resellers, and managed security service providers.

That is an important customer commitment, but it is not independent proof of identical feature depth across every environment. Technical multicloud support and commercial neutrality are different questions. Google could preserve APIs and integrations while giving Google Cloud customers preferential bundling, support, pricing, or roadmap access.

Customers should verify:

  • Cloud-specific feature parity and remediation capabilities
  • Data residency and telemetry-processing arrangements
  • Support boundaries and escalation paths
  • Whether integrations depend on Google Cloud services
  • Product-roadmap commitments and contract protections
  • Exit rights and the ability to export findings, policies, inventories, and historical data

What changes for existing Wiz customers?

The acquisition does not automatically require AWS or Azure customers to migrate workloads to Google Cloud. Google’s post-close statement explicitly says Wiz will remain available across the major cloud environments listed above.

However, customers should review their next renewal rather than assuming nothing will change. Pay particular attention to:

  1. Change-of-control terms: Confirm whether the acquisition triggers consent, termination, or renegotiation rights.
  2. Pricing mechanics: Determine whether charges are based on workloads, assets, developers, log volume, sensors, or other usage measures.
  3. Data handling: Recheck data-processing terms, regional storage, access controls, and cross-border transfers.
  4. Roadmap and support: Ask whether AWS and Azure integrations will receive equivalent engineering and support attention.
  5. Product overlap: Map Wiz features against Google Cloud Security Command Center and other tools to avoid duplicate entitlements.
  6. Portability: Test how easily the organization can export data and replace the service if commercial neutrality weakens.

Google Security Command Center versus Wiz

After the acquisition, the choice is less likely to be “Google versus Wiz” and more likely to be Wiz inside Google Cloud versus native cloud-security suites and independent platforms.

Google Security Command Center is generally the more natural fit for organizations centered on Google Cloud that want native integration with Google services, Google security operations, and Google Cloud billing. Google’s pricing page lists a free Standard tier, paid Premium and Enterprise tiers, and subscription or pay-as-you-go models. Premium pricing can be linked to applicable Google Cloud spend, while Enterprise includes separate pricing components for Google Cloud and other-cloud environments. Check the current pricing page before making a purchase because these models can change. Google Security Command Center pricing

Wiz is more attractive when the priority is a broad, standalone platform spanning multiple clouds, code, posture, attack paths, and runtime controls. The trade-off is custom pricing, possible platform-concentration risk, and uncertainty about how much independence customers will retain under Google ownership.

Other alternatives have different strengths:

Option Best fit Pricing signal Main limitation
Wiz Broad multicloud and AI-security consolidation Custom, modular licensing; marketplace examples Vendor-neutrality and concentration concerns
Security Command Center Google Cloud-centered organizations Free Standard; paid Premium and Enterprise tiers Greater dependence on Google Cloud integration and billing
Microsoft Defender for Cloud Azure and Microsoft-security customers Pay-as-you-go; Azure subscription required Less compelling outside the Microsoft ecosystem
Amazon GuardDuty AWS-native threat detection Usage-based pay-as-you-go Not a complete substitute for broad multicloud CNAPP capabilities

Microsoft Defender for Cloud pricing and Amazon GuardDuty pricing should be checked for current regional and usage-based charges.

The main risks

Integration risk: Combining product teams, consoles, identities, data planes, and billing systems could create duplicate findings or confusing entitlements before it simplifies operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neutrality risk: Wiz may remain technically multicloud while becoming commercially optimized for Google Cloud. That could reduce its appeal to AWS and Azure customers.

Competition risk: A major cloud provider owning an independent multicloud-security vendor raises questions about bundling, telemetry access, distribution, and whether rival-cloud customers receive equal treatment. Those concerns are separate from Google’s search-related antitrust cases.

Execution risk: Google must retain Wiz’s developer-oriented culture and product momentum while integrating it deeply enough to justify the acquisition price.

Customer-operational risk: Buying a platform does not fix unresolved privilege, exposed secrets, insecure CI/CD pipelines, or missing runtime detection. A security team without assigned remediation owners can simply create another unmanaged queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s claim that the combined platform will address AI-generated attacks and attacks against AI systems should likewise be treated as a product objective, not a guarantee against AI-enabled breaches.

What buyers should measure before signing

  • Coverage of VMs, containers, Kubernetes, serverless, databases, storage, identities, code, and AI workloads
  • Agentless discovery versus the additional context provided by sensors and runtime telemetry
  • Attack-path prioritization and the reduction of low-value alerts
  • Integration with CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, ticketing, pull requests, and ownership systems
  • Telemetry storage, access, isolation, and regional availability
  • Pricing under realistic workload, developer, log, and sensor growth
  • Support for required certifications, public-sector rules, and geographic restrictions
  • Export and replacement procedures if the relationship ends

A serious evaluation should use the organization’s actual cloud mix and workflows. A platform can look comprehensive in a demonstration while leaving important gaps in runtime coverage, remediation, data governance, or operational ownership.
