Google Cloud plans to help existing partners enter more regions while recruiting new partners in emerging markets, according to David Smith, the company’s worldwide head of partner programs. The reported investment is a strategic commitment, not a disclosed grant or guaranteed funding program: CRN’s 2026 report gives no amount, market-by-market timetable, or expansion target.
How can Google Cloud partners expand into new regions?
Smith described two parallel goals: support current partners that want to grow beyond their home regions, and add local partners in markets where Google Cloud sees customer opportunity. He said the approach would be deliberately adapted to regional conditions rather than applied uniformly. As he put it, “We’re going to be thoughtful and deliberate about investing globally, and we’re going to intentionally be regionally aware so that we don’t create one-size-fits-all partner programs,” CRN reported.
That local emphasis matters because buying patterns and localization needs differ. Smith said, “The whole world isn’t like the U.S. or Canada or U.K. or France or Germany, which some might describe as mature markets.” He named Indonesia, Mexico, and Japan as places where local partners are welcome; those examples do not establish a confirmed launch schedule for any of the three countries.
The report does not explain whether “invest” means staff support, training, marketing, financial incentives, or another mechanism. Partners should therefore treat expansion support as a stated direction, not assume a particular benefit or budget.

What is the Google Cloud Partner Network?
CRN describes the Partner Network as a revised recognition model that puts more weight on customer outcomes and specialized competencies. The reported measures move away from traditional requirements such as business plans and customer stories and toward the partner’s role in pre-sales influence, co-innovation, post-sales support, and customer success. The account does not provide a full scoring formula or independent assessment of how the measures work in practice.
Competency levels and recognition
The report describes 21 new competencies and two recognition levels: baseline Competency and Advanced Competency. Competencies are intended to help partners demonstrate specialization and may create potential co-selling opportunities, but the article does not specify universal qualification thresholds or guarantee co-selling access. The count is a description in CRN’s 2026 report, not a count that should be assumed to remain current.

Customer outcomes alongside technical specialization
The approach combines evidence of technical expertise with evidence of contribution across the customer relationship. A specialization can help distinguish a partner, while work influencing a purchase, collaborating on innovation, supporting deployment, or contributing to customer success addresses a different part of the model. CRN presents these as program priorities; it does not publish a partner scorecard that would let applicants calculate an outcome.
Does Google Cloud still require regional partner certifications?
CRN reports that Google is eliminating regional certification requirements and recognizing regional credentials globally. That is a reported change in the credential approach, rather than a detailed list of which credentials transfer or how each competency is validated. Partners should confirm current requirements for their specific role and market with Google Cloud before relying on a credential for eligibility.
Rank #3
R. Brooks Borcherding, Pythian’s CEO, said the prior arrangement required partners to certify separately in each region and created challenges for smaller system integrators. He described global recognition as a major growth opportunity for Pythian. That is his assessment of the change, not a quantified measure of reduced cost, faster expansion, or guaranteed access to new markets.
What does the strategy mean for partner businesses?
The reported changes address three distinct expansion hurdles: entering a new geography, showing specialized capability, and demonstrating value beyond the initial sale. For a partner evaluating an expansion, useful questions include:
Rank #4
- Market fit: Which local customer needs, buying patterns, languages, and implementation expectations require local expertise?
- Credential portability: Which existing credentials are recognized across regions, and which current program requirements still apply?
- Customer outcomes: Can the partner show its role in pre-sales, co-innovation, implementation support, and customer success?
- Commercial path: What specific requirements govern any co-selling opportunity, and what support is actually available in the target market?
These are practical dimensions for assessing the announced approach, not a published Google scorecard. The report does not disclose a country rollout sequence, expansion targets, or a defined funding mechanism.

Pythian’s Borcherding pointed to the company’s change-management work supporting Gemini adoption and its Oracle Database@Google Cloud practice. The examples show the kinds of consulting and implementation services a partner may offer around Google Cloud customers. They do not establish an affiliate relationship or imply that such services are required for partner recognition.

Why this matters to Google Cloud—and what the figures do not show
CRN reported Google Cloud revenue of $17.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, up 48 percent year over year, and an annual run rate of $71 billion. These are figures cited by CRN in its 2026 coverage, not current-period results or proof that the partner initiative caused growth. They provide business context for the expansion strategy, but do not establish how much Google will invest in partners or what any individual partner may earn.
