Google’s August 6, 2025 announcement is a real first-party claim, not an independently verified finding. Liz Reid, Google’s vice president and head of Search, said AI Overviews and AI Mode are prompting more searches, longer questions and “slightly more” high-quality clicks to websites than a year earlier. Google defines a quality click as one after which the user does not quickly return to Google.
Independent Pew Research Center data points in a different direction for individual searches: traditional-result clicks occurred on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when no summary appeared. The two findings can coexist because they measure different denominators and outcomes. Google has not released the numbers or methodology needed to verify its aggregate claim.
What Google actually claimed
In its August 6, 2025 announcement, Google described several separate trends rather than one independently measured result.
| Google’s statement | What it means | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| More queries | AI Overviews and AI Mode let people ask questions they might not previously have asked. | The percentage increase in total queries. |
| Longer, more complex searches | Users are asking conversational, exploratory and multi-step questions. | How this changed traffic for any publisher category. |
| Relatively stable organic click volume | Google says total clicks from Search to websites are broadly stable year over year. | Baseline and current click totals, or whether stability applies to small sites, countries or industries. |
| More “quality clicks” | Google says users who click are slightly less likely to return quickly to Google. | The size of the increase, the time window for “quickly,” conversions, revenue or subscriptions. |
| More discovery opportunities | AI results can contain links and expose sites during additional searches. | Whether users actually select those links or whether citations deliver meaningful referrals. |
| Traffic is shifting | Some sites are gaining while others lose visibility. | A list of winners and losers, with results by publisher size or business model. |
Google also says users increasingly seek forums, videos, podcasts, detailed reviews, original posts, unique perspectives and first-person analysis. That is the company’s description of the direction of Search, not a guaranteed ranking formula.

The evidence Google did not publish
Google supplied qualitative descriptions and its behavioral definition of a quality click, but not a reproducible dataset. The announcement contains no:
- Percentage change in query volume or AI Overview and AI Mode exposure.
- Before-and-after count of organic clicks.
- Number or distribution of quality clicks.
- Formal definition of how quickly a user must return.
- Conversion, lead, purchase, subscription or revenue comparison.
- Breakdown by geography, device, industry, query type or publisher size.
- Separation of AI Overviews, AI Mode and other Search features.
- List of sites or categories that gained and lost traffic.
- Independent audit or methodology that an outside researcher can reproduce.
Search Engine Land and Engadget both noted that the announcement lacked supporting figures and detail about publisher outcomes.
What “higher-quality click” means—and does not mean
Google’s metric is a proprietary engagement proxy: a click is considered higher quality when the user does not quickly click back to Google. That may indicate that the landing page met the user’s immediate need, but it is not a commercial quality score.
- A user can stay on a page without buying, subscribing or submitting a lead.
- A quick return can be legitimate, such as comparing several products or checking another source.
- A short visit can still produce a valuable conversion.
- A long visit can reflect confusion or a difficult-to-use page.
Accordingly, “higher-quality clicks” should not be translated into higher revenue or better traffic without a site’s own conversion data.
What Pew measured
Pew Research Center analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults. The dataset covered 68,879 unique Google searches conducted from March 1 through March 31, 2025; search-result pages were collected from April 7 through April 17.

| Outcome | AI summary present | No AI summary |
|---|---|---|
| Click on a traditional result | 8% of visits | 15% of visits |
| Click on a link inside the AI summary | 1% of visits with a summary | Not applicable |
| Browsing session ended on the results page | 26% | 16% |
AI summaries appeared on about 18% of searches in the dataset. Longer, question-style and full-sentence searches were more likely to produce one. Pew’s study measured what users did next after a results page; it did not measure publisher revenue, the quality of any resulting visit or all Google traffic. Its methodology is described at Pew’s metered-data methodology page.
Are Google and Pew contradicting each other?
Not necessarily. The studies use different units and metrics.
Different denominators
Pew compares the probability of a click on an individual search visit with and without an AI summary. Google discusses aggregate organic clicks across Search. If AI increases the number of searches enough, total clicks could remain stable even while the click rate on summary pages falls.

Different outcomes
Pew records whether a user clicked next. Google evaluates what happened after a click—specifically, whether the user returned quickly. Pew does not establish whether its clicks were commercially valuable, and Google does not disclose how often users clicked.
Traffic can be redistributed
Stable aggregate traffic can conceal serious losses for individual publishers. Clicks may shift toward Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, forums, large brands or other high-authority destinations. Pew found Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia among the frequently cited sources in both AI summaries and standard results.

Query mix can change
Google says AI encourages exploratory and multi-step searches. One plausible implication is that simple factual queries generate fewer visits while product research or complex problem-solving queries generate fewer but more engaged visitors. That is an interpretation of Google’s description, not a measured result.
What the 2026 context adds
In a February 17–23, 2026 survey reported in June, Pew found that 60% of U.S. adults said they had read AI summaries at the top of search results: Pew’s 2026 chart. This shows broad familiarity with the format, not increased outbound clicks, publisher traffic or revenue. It should not be treated as confirmation of Google’s 2025 claim.
Which sites may gain—and which face zero-click pressure?
Content Google says it wants to surface
- Original research, datasets and evidence.
- First-hand experience and expert interpretation.
- Detailed product and service reviews.
- Unique analysis, demonstrations, calculators and tools.
- Forums, community discussions, video and podcast material.
- Pages that answer the next question after an overview.
- Commercial pages with clear pricing, availability and purchase information.
These categories come from Google’s own description and are not guarantees of rankings or traffic.
Content most exposed to zero-click behavior
- Simple definitions and generic “what is” explainers.
- Dates, conversions, calculations and other short factual answers.
- Commodity listicles and rewritten summaries.
- Pages whose only value is answering one easily summarized question.
Google gives “when is the next full moon” as an example of a query that may be answered without a visit.

Search Console does not currently provide a perfect public dimension that isolates AI Overview impressions from ordinary results, so site-level analysis cannot by itself identify causation.
What evidence would settle the dispute?
A convincing public assessment would need query-volume trends, click-through rates by Search feature, a precise quality-click definition and time window, conversion and revenue comparisons, and publisher-level results by category and size. Independent or auditable measurement would also show whether aggregate stability reflects broad health or gains concentrated among a small number of platforms.
A UK government competition document records publishers’ concern that they cannot accurately determine whether referrals from search-generative-AI features are more valuable than traditional referrals: Publisher conduct requirement. Another government-hosted document records Google’s position that AI Overviews increase query volume and provide higher-quality clicks: Google submission. Their inclusion in policy proceedings documents the dispute; it does not independently validate Google’s figures.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI Search may be expanding the number and complexity of searches while reducing the chance that a user clicks a website on any one results page. Google’s assertion that the remaining clicks are slightly higher quality is plausible but publicly unverified. Publishers should judge the impact through segmented Search Console data, engagement metrics, conversions and revenue—not through Google’s aggregate statement or click counts alone.
