The north Seattle storefront let customers collect Amazon orders, make returns and get help from employees. It was a logistics and customer-service site—not a conventional store selling Amazon’s full online inventory.
The opening was reported as part of Amazon’s expanding physical presence. However, the original Bitter Lake public pickup operation should be treated as historical: a third-party listing now marks it permanently closed, while an Amazon facilities document still lists the address as an operational site without proving that customers can use it as a pickup counter.
What opened at 14333 Aurora Ave. N.?
Amazon’s June 2018 launch was a staffed pickup-and-returns storefront serving northern Seattle. Customers selected the location as a delivery destination, waited for Amazon’s arrival notice, then visited the counter for employee-assisted collection. Launch coverage also described help with returns and other customer-service tasks. GeekWire’s report described the site as a secure alternative to packages being left at home.
- Package pickup from a staffed counter.
- Returns assistance and processing.
- A secure destination for customers worried about unattended deliveries.
- One centralized pickup point for northern Seattle customers.
How pickup worked
- Select the Seattle pickup address as the delivery destination during checkout, when the option was available.
- Wait for Amazon’s notification that the order had arrived.
- Go to the storefront during its operating hours.
- Have staff retrieve and hand over the package.
- Use the same location for eligible return transactions or assistance.
Contemporary reports do not establish every detail of the customer interface, such as a specific barcode or app flow. Amazon later documented barcode-based procedures for its Counter partner network, announced in 2019; that was a subsequent program and should not be retroactively treated as the exact Seattle opening process.

Seattle storefront versus an Amazon Locker
| Feature | Staffed Seattle storefront | Amazon Locker |
|---|---|---|
| Human assistance | Yes; employees handled pickup and returns support | Generally no; collection is self-service |
| Package pickup | Yes | Yes |
| Returns | Returns assistance was part of the reported service | Depends on the specific locker and available return service |
| Physical format | Storefront with a customer-service counter | Automated locker bank |
| Primary purpose | Pickup, returns and support | Secure self-service delivery |
The Seattle site was therefore more like a staffed shipping counter combined with Amazon’s pickup network than simply another locker installation. It also should not be confused with a fulfillment center: customers visited the site, but it was not described as a standard warehouse where Amazon processed its entire inventory.
What shipping benefits were advertised in 2018?
At the time of the opening, Amazon said the location offered free same-day and one-day shipping on millions of eligible items for Prime customers. The launch report also said shipping to the pickup location was free on all orders, avoiding the $25 minimum cited in that 2018 coverage. Those were opening-era terms, not a promise that the same benefits remain available in 2026.
Actual speed depended on Prime eligibility, item inventory, destination, order timing and whether the product qualified for same-day or one-day service. A pickup option could also disappear if a location was unavailable, full or no longer supported.
Why Amazon added a physical pickup point
Reducing unattended-delivery risk
A staffed destination gave customers a way to avoid packages sitting outside apartments or houses. That mattered to people concerned about theft, shared entrances or not being home during delivery.

Making fast delivery useful
Consolidating orders at one customer-facing site could make rapid delivery more practical for shoppers who preferred collecting several packages in one trip.
Creating a returns channel
Returns are a major part of online shopping. A dedicated counter gave Amazon a physical place to support returns instead of leaving every step to carrier drop-offs or mail-in processes.
Serving customers without secure home delivery
Apartment residents, people sharing housing, frequent travelers and customers without a reliable receiving location gained another delivery choice—at the cost of traveling to the storefront.
How significant was the opening?
GeekWire reported that Amazon had about 30 U.S. pickup locations when the Seattle site opened. That was an approximate June 2018 count, not a current network total. The storefront was notable locally, but one site did not turn Amazon into a conventional chain of retail shops.

Where it fit in Amazon’s Seattle physical strategy
Amazon was experimenting with several kinds of real-world locations at the same time:
- Amazon Books: merchandise-focused bookstores.
- Amazon Go: cashierless convenience stores.
- AmazonFresh Pickup: grocery pickup and delivery sites.
- Whole Foods Market: the grocery chain Amazon acquired in 2017.
- Package pickup and return points: logistics and customer-service locations such as the Aurora Avenue storefront.
- Automated lockers: self-service collection points.
Amazon’s later Seattle retail expansion included Amazon 4-star, as described by Amazon. These formats shared a broader physical-retail strategy but served different purposes. The Aurora Avenue site primarily supported delivery and returns rather than merchandise discovery.

In June 2019, Amazon announced Counter, a U.S. pickup service hosted initially by partners including Rite Aid. Amazon said the network had more than 100 locations at launch. In October 2019, it announced thousands of additional partner locations and described a 14-day pickup period in that expansion announcement.

Counter, Lockers, Locker+ sites and apartment lockers became parts of a wider pickup-and-return network. They should not be collapsed into one program: the Seattle storefront opened in 2018 as an Amazon-operated staffed location, while Counter relied heavily on third-party retailers and was announced later.
Is the Seattle location still open?
Current public availability is not established. A third-party Cybo listing identifies “Amazon Pickup and Returns – Bitter Lake” at 14333 Aurora Ave. N. as permanently closed. Separately, an Amazon-hosted facilities document associates that address with an Amazon operational site. The latter does not confirm that a public pickup counter remains there.
Customers should rely on the pickup locations shown in their current Amazon checkout rather than an old article, saved address or map listing. A listed address alone does not prove that it accepts customer packages, has the same hours or offers the 2018 shipping terms.
Practical trade-offs for customers
- Pros: lower exposure to porch theft, a predictable handoff point, possible access to eligible fast shipping and employee help with returns.
- Cons: travel time, traffic and parking, dependence on opening hours, and eligibility limits for large, restricted or unusually shaped items.
- Eligibility: pickup and return options vary by item, inventory, address, account status and the location’s capacity.
- Timing: same-day or one-day promises apply only to qualifying orders under the terms shown at checkout.
Bottom line
Amazon’s June 2018 Seattle opening was a staffed delivery-and-returns hub at 14333 Aurora Ave. N., not a full Amazon department store and not merely an automated locker. It showed how Amazon was using physical locations to secure packages, support returns and improve convenience while expanding a broader mix of stores, grocery sites, lockers and partner pickup points.
