Why a stronger dollar can weigh on precious metals
Gold and silver are commonly quoted internationally in US dollars. Reuters explained that when the dollar strengthens, dollar-priced metals can become more expensive for buyers using other currencies, which can curb demand and put pressure on prices. In this snapshot, the dollar was near an 18-month high recorded in the previous session.

Reuters quoted Jim Wyckoff, market analyst at American Gold Exchange, saying: “We’re seeing some selling pressure in gold because the dollar is near a one-and-a-half-year high.” That is one market explanation for the day’s decline, not proof that currency movements alone determine either metal’s price.
Inflation readings and Fed expectations in focus
Contemporaneous Reuters reporting identified US inflation data and expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates as near-term market concerns. It said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was due Wednesday, with the Producer Price Index (PPI) and retail-sales data due Thursday. Those are the calendar dates reported on October 13; readers checking this update later should confirm the release schedule for the relevant year and time zone.

Inflation figures can affect expectations about the path of interest rates, while rate expectations can influence yields and the dollar—factors investors watch when assessing non-yielding assets such as gold. Reuters quoted Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com: “US CPI data will be critical for gold in the short-term.” The comment describes the analyst’s view of the upcoming data, not a forecast of the figures or their eventual market impact.
Daily prices differ from September’s monthly picture
The October 13 snapshot is a point-in-time daily reading. It should not be confused with the World Gold Council’s separate account of September: the Council said gold finished that month at US$4,176 per ounce, down 8.5% month over month. Its Gold Return Attribution Model suggested that higher yields and a stronger US dollar were major contributors to September’s decline.

The Council also reported US$10 billion, or 67 tonnes, of global gold ETF inflows during September despite the price drop. Those are the Council’s reported figures; they do not describe October 13 trading or establish that ETF flows caused the price movement.
Spot is not the price you pay at a dealer
A spot quotation is a market reference, not a guaranteed checkout price for a coin, bar, or piece of jewelry. Monex says physical gold and silver prices are higher than spot because of product fabrication, dealer services, and current market conditions. Retail costs can therefore vary by product and seller; the figures in the table do not include a specified local currency conversion, tax, product premium, or jewelry-making charge.

For a country-specific consumer rate, the relevant quote would need to identify the local currency, unit and—where applicable—metal purity, taxes, and retail premium. This snapshot does not provide those local details, so it cannot be used as a complete local rate table.
How to read a live rate update
- Check the timestamp: prices move during trading. The figures here are specifically Reuters’ 0201 GMT snapshot on October 13, 2026.
- Check the instrument: spot and futures are distinct quotations. The $4,187.90 figure is December gold futures, not spot gold.
- Check the unit and currency: both spot prices above are USD per troy ounce, not per gram or per local-market unit.
- Check the purpose: use spot as a market benchmark, not as a promise of the price a consumer will pay for physical metal.
Other observations from the same date may carry later timestamps and show different prices. For example, Kitco displayed indicative gold at $4,157.60 per ounce at 21:45 New York time on October 12 and said its rates refreshed about every 10 seconds during trading hours. That earlier snapshot predates Reuters’ 0201 GMT reading; the two should not be treated as simultaneous or directly interchangeable.
