Those are futures prices at specific points in early trading—not a universal spot quote or the retail price of a gold coin.
What was the gold price on October 6?
Yahoo Finance’s October 6 report gives two early-session readings for the December gold futures contract: an opening quote of $4,169.20 per troy ounce, and a price of $4,187.30 per troy ounce at 6:59 a.m. ET. The reported opening gain was 0.3% versus Monday’s close. These figures describe a particular futures contract and time, so they should not be read as the price of every form of gold.
A separate October 7 recap reported different October 6 measures later in the session: front-month Comex gold settled at $4,159.20, up 0.75%, while spot gold was near $4,165.40, up 0.63%, in late U.S. trading. Those settlement and late-session readings are not interchangeable with the December-contract opening and early quote reported by Yahoo Finance. Guardian Gold’s recap identifies its figures as front-month settlement and late-trading spot, respectively.
Why price type and time matter
A futures quote is tied to a contract month and reflects trading in that contract. Spot refers to the market price for near-immediate delivery. A coin’s retail price can differ from either because the quoted market figure is not itself a retail offer. Before comparing prices, check whether the number is for futures or spot, which contract it covers, and when it was observed.

What was behind the day’s move?
Yahoo Finance described competing forces on gold. Its report linked lower oil prices—associated in the article with fewer Middle East supply disruptions—and weaker U.S. job numbers with easing inflation concerns. It also said a stronger U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields pressured precious metals, while safe-haven demand from other countries offered support. These are the publication’s account of the market backdrop, not proof that any one factor caused the price change.
The same report said CME Group’s FedWatch tool showed a 78.4% chance that the Federal Reserve would leave rates unchanged later in October. That was a time-sensitive probability reported by Yahoo Finance, not an official Federal Reserve forecast.

How the reported historical comparisons fit
Yahoo Finance’s article also compared the gold-price series it used with earlier periods: it reported the series up 0.5% over one week, down 7.8% over one month, and up 6.5% over one year. The article called the one-year growth rate the lowest since its daily series began and contrasted it with a 95.6% one-year gain on January 29. The 95.6% figure describes that January comparison, not the return as of October 6. These are historical comparisons for the publication’s series, not a forecast of future performance.

A headline futures price is not a complete investing decision or a ready-made price for bullion. Yahoo Finance discusses exposure through bullion, coins, and ETFs, but the figures in its market report do not compare those choices’ fees, liquidity, tracking differences, custody arrangements, or tax treatment. Those details require separate, product- and jurisdiction-specific information.

Gold can lose value; its price may be affected by macroeconomic, political, industrial, and financial factors. As Darrell Fletcher, managing director of commodities at Bannockburn Capital Markets, put it: “Buying high to hope for short-term higher is a tough strategy.”
Alex Tsepaev, chief strategy officer of B2PRIME Group, described gold as a portfolio stabilizer rather than a high-growth engine: “Gold should not be seen as a driver of supercharged returns — it’s there to act primarily as a stabilizer in a diversified portfolio.” Thomas Winmill, portfolio manager at Midas Funds, cautioned that “commodity prices are dependent on macroeconomic, political, industrial, and financial factors that are unpredictable, and in some cases, unknowable.”
