Reuters reported spot gold at $4,163.16 an ounce and December U.S. gold futures at $4,191 in an intraday snapshot—not closing prices or live quotes. The combination can support gold because a weaker dollar lowers its cost for many overseas buyers, while lower yields reduce the relative pull of income-producing investments.
What happened to gold on October 6?
Reuters reported spot gold up 0.6% to $4,163.16 per ounce by 12:22 p.m. EDT (16:22 GMT) on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. December-delivery U.S. gold futures were up 0.8% to $4,191 in the same report. These figures describe that moment in the trading session; they are not the day’s closing prices or current market quotes. Reuters report republished by MarketScreener
Spot gold is a reference price for gold available in the market, while a futures price applies to a contract for delivery in a specified month. A futures contract provides market exposure and is not the same as owning physical bullion.
Why can a weaker dollar and lower yields lift gold?
A softer dollar can make gold cheaper abroad
Gold is priced in U.S. dollars. When the dollar weakens, buyers using other currencies may find the same dollar-denominated ounce costs less in their own currency, all else equal. That can support demand. Reuters described the dollar as retreating from a one-year high during the reported session.

Lower yields reduce the relative appeal of income
Physical gold does not pay interest. When yields on assets such as U.S. Treasuries rise, those income-producing alternatives can look more attractive relative to gold. Reuters said the 10-year Treasury yield edged lower after reaching a more than two-decade high on Monday, easing one source of pressure on bullion.
These relationships help explain the session’s move, but they do not mean gold must rise whenever the dollar or yields fall. Prices reflect multiple forces, and one intraday advance does not establish a longer-term direction.

What were traders watching about Federal Reserve policy?
Investors were waiting for minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, scheduled for release Wednesday, for further clues about policy. Reuters also linked reduced expectations for a rate increase that month to weaker-than-expected September job growth.
According to Reuters’ account of the CME FedWatch Tool at the time, traders priced a 22% chance of an October rate increase and an 84% probability of a December increase. These were market-implied expectations reported on October 6, not Fed decisions or guarantees about what policymakers would do.

Why did bond-market concerns matter to gold?
The Reuters report also cited safe-haven demand amid turmoil in the French bond market and growing concern about U.S. Treasury markets. Investors were concerned about government debt and widening budget deficits in parts of the euro zone, particularly France. In that setting, some investors may turn to gold as an asset outside government bond markets.
Jim Wyckoff, a market analyst at American Gold Exchange, attributed demand to “the turmoil in the French bond market and growing concerns about the US Treasury markets,” according to Reuters. This was one analyst’s explanation for the market at the time, not evidence that all gold buyers shared the same motive.

How should investors interpret the outlook comments?
TD Securities analysts told Reuters that ETF buying and discretionary-investor demand were supporting gold despite near-term headwinds. They said they maintained a view that gold would move above $5,000 per ounce in 2027. That is an attributed forecast from the firm, not a guaranteed price, a market consensus, or a result established by the October 6 session.
The day’s advance is best read as a modest move amid a softer dollar, slightly lower Treasury yields, and reported safe-haven interest. The same rate backdrop can still matter in the opposite direction: higher yields can increase the appeal of investments that pay income, while gold itself does not.
