The reported gold discovery is in Pingjiang County, Hunan—not Henan—and the headline figure of more than 1,000 tonnes is a projection for deeper resources, not a confirmed mineable reserve. Hunan officials valued that projected resource at 600 billion yuan at gold prices current in November 2024; it is an estimate of in-ground resources, not €75 billion in cash or expected revenue.
Where was the gold discovery?
The Wangu gold field is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, central China. It is not in Henan, as the January 2025 headline article states. The Hunan Provincial People’s Government described the exploration results on November 22, 2024, and an English-language report from the Hunan Government Website, citing Xinhua, followed on November 23. What do the 300.2-tonne and 1,000-tonne figures represent?

The distinction matters: a resource estimate describes mineralization considered present or potentially present, while a mineable reserve requires evidence that extraction is economically and technically viable under specified conditions. The reports reviewed do not establish a formal reserve classification, feasibility study, mine plan, production schedule, environmental assessment, or independent verification of the deeper projection. The 1,000-tonne number should therefore retain words such as “projected” or “prospective.” Hunan Provincial People’s Government.
Is it really worth €75 billion?
The Hunan government report valued the projected resource of more than 1,000 tonnes at 600 billion yuan using gold prices current at the time of its November 2024 report. The English-language Hunan Government Website/Xinhua report rendered that estimate as about US$83 billion. An in-ground valuation based on a stated gold price is not the same as the value of recoverable metal or a mine’s profit. It does not, on its own, account for recovery rates, operating and construction costs, financing, taxes, permitting, or the time needed to develop a mine. The reports do not provide those figures, so the 600-billion-yuan estimate should not be read as a forecast of cash proceeds.
What technical details were reported?
The English-language report says geologists detected more than 40 veins and that some ore in the 2,000-metre depth range contained a reported maximum of 138 grams of gold per tonne. It also says the exploration used 3D geological modelling. These are reported project details, not independently audited assay results established by the report. Hunan Government Website/Xinhua.

Could the discovery change global gold prices?
The reporting does not establish that the Wangu discovery will affect global gold prices. The deeper figure is prospective, and the sources do not give a mine plan, production schedule, or expected output with which to assess future supply. In January 2025, the China Geological Survey reported a combined 168 tonnes of newly added gold resources across three separate areas: Anbali North in Gansu, Hadamengou in Inner Mongolia, and Tahe Baoxinggou in Heilongjiang. Those are distinct exploration results; they should not be added to Wangu’s figures or treated as part of the same deposit. China Geological Survey.
