The parts shortage that disrupted General Motors production was reported at the company’s Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri in September 2025. GM temporarily adjusted schedules and announced a layoff period from September 29 through October 19; the company said it expected normal operations to resume October 20. The report does not establish that the disruption is ongoing.

What happened at GM’s Wentzville plant?

On September 15, 2025, Ars Technica reported that GM would temporarily lay off workers at Wentzville Assembly after a reported parts shortage. A letter from the plant head and local union head described “a temporary layoff from September 29–October 19.” The dates and stated cause were reported by Ars, which reproduced the letter; they are not a separately verified notice. Ars Technica’s report describes the announcement.

At the time, Ars described the facility workforce as more than 4,000 employees. That is an approximate figure from its 2025 report, not a current headcount. UAW Local 2250’s membership page lists approximately 4,200 active members, a separate union figure accessed in 2026; it should not be treated as the plant’s employee count. UAW Local 2250

Which vehicles does Wentzville build?

UAW Local 2250 identifies four vehicle lines at the plant:

The reported announcement did not quantify lost production or specify how many vehicles were affected.

What did GM say caused the disruption?

The letter cited a parts shortage. GM’s public explanation, provided by email to Ars Technica, was broader: “We have temporarily adjusted production schedules at Wentzville Assembly to address supply chain issues and align with overall business needs. The plant is expected to resume normal operations on October 20.” Ars Technica reproduced GM’s statement.

The sources do not identify the missing component, supplier, or a more specific root cause. They also do not establish that the problem involved semiconductors, trade policy, or other GM plants.

Why can a parts interruption affect vehicle production?

GM’s 2024 annual report explains that its manufacturing depends on suppliers delivering systems, components, and parts when needed. It describes just-in-time operations as maintaining minimal inventories and warns that even a short supplier disruption can lead to production schedule changes or suspension. This explains why a parts interruption can affect assembly, but it does not identify the cause of the Wentzville event. GM 2024 annual report

Was the disruption still happening in 2026?

The reported interruption was a September–October 2025 event. GM’s October 20 restart date was an expectation stated at the time, not independent confirmation of the restart or evidence about current operations. The available reporting does not establish whether the same cause affected another plant or quantify the production impact.
