Contemporary coverage tied the figure to roughly 1,200 jobs at GM’s Detroit-area electric-vehicle assembly plant and 550 at its Ultium Cells battery-cell plant in Ohio. The Associated Press described the overall event as about 1,700 layoffs. Those figures refer to different facility types and should not be read as 1,750 battery-plant workers.
How many workers did GM lay off?
On October 29, 2025, GM confirmed workforce reductions at manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio as it realigned EV capacity. The Associated Press reported about 1,200 jobs at the Detroit-area all-electric assembly plant and 550 workers at the Ultium Cells battery-cell plant in Ohio. A U.S. Senate committee letter later cited a New York Times headline reporting 1,750 job cuts in GM’s electric-vehicle business; that supports the broader EV-business framing, not the claim that all the cuts were at battery factories.
AP also relayed separate reports of 850 temporary layoffs in Ohio and 700 in Tennessee. It did not characterize those temporary layoffs as the same employment category as the roughly 1,200 and 550 reported cuts. The figures should not be added together to produce a total unique-worker count: the available reporting does not reconcile how many distinct employees were affected across permanent or announced cuts and temporary layoffs.
Which facilities were involved?
Detroit-area EV assembly
GM identifies Factory ZERO in Detroit as its first fully dedicated EV assembly plant. The roughly 1,200 figure reported by AP concerns this assembly facility, not a battery-cell factory. GM’s facility directory distinguishes Factory ZERO from its battery-related sites.

Ohio battery-cell production
The 550 reported workers were at Ultium Cells’ battery-cell plant in Warren, Ohio. Cell manufacturing is distinct from vehicle assembly and from making battery packs. GM’s directory also lists Brownstown Battery in Michigan as a separate facility that assembles electric drive units and battery packs for specified GM vehicles.
Tennessee and temporary layoffs
AP relayed reports of 700 temporary layoffs at a Tennessee facility, separate from the announced Warren production pause and the reported cuts above. GM said battery-cell production in Warren and at a Spring Hill, Tennessee facility would pause beginning in January 2026 for upgrades, with operations anticipated to resume by mid-2026. That was a forecast reported in October 2025; the sources available here do not confirm whether production restarted on schedule.

Why did GM say it was reducing or pausing production?
GM’s statement, quoted by AP, said: “In response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning EV capacity.” The company also said Ultium Cells was “adjusting production in response to recent changes in customer plant demand.” These are GM’s stated reasons; they do not establish that any one factor was the sole or independently proven cause.
What did GM say about pay and benefits?
GM said affected employees “may be eligible to continue receiving a significant portion of their regular wages or salary, plus benefits.” The wording is conditional. It does not specify an individual worker’s eligibility, how much pay someone might receive, or how long any support would continue.

Michigan’s Labor and Economic Opportunity agency maintains public WARN notices for checking Michigan layoff and closure notices. A public notice does not determine an individual’s eligibility for continued pay, benefits, unemployment, recall, or other support; workers need current information from the employer, union, or relevant government agency for those decisions.

On September 29, 2026, GM announced plans for Ultium Cells to produce lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells at Spring Hill. GM said construction and facility upgrades would begin later in 2026 and were expected to finish in 2028. The company projected 500 new jobs in addition to a current workforce of 1,200. These are company projections and future plans, not jobs already created or evidence that workers affected by the earlier pause will be recalled.

The available information does not establish the eventual employment outcome for every affected worker or the actual status of paused production after its projected restart date. Individual outcomes and current plant operations require confirmation from up-to-date employer, union, or government records.
