GM’s announced Fairfax Assembly sequence is the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, then the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027, followed by a next-generation Buick compact SUV in 2028. TechCrunch identified that Buick as the Envision and reported on January 22, 2026, that Bolt production was expected to end in about a year and a half. GM has not published a precise Bolt end date.
What GM plans to build at Fairfax
Fairfax Assembly is in Kansas City, Kansas. GM’s January 29, 2026 workforce announcement described a transition from Bolt production to the Equinox, followed by a next-generation Buick compact SUV. Its June 2025 announcement had already said gas-powered Equinox production at Fairfax was planned to begin in mid-2027. GM’s January 2026 Fairfax announcement and its June 2025 production plan establish the sequence and target dates.
| Vehicle | Powertrain or description | Production context | Fairfax timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Bolt | Electric | Currently assembled at Fairfax using domestically and globally sourced parts, according to GM’s October 2025 reveal. | In production; GM calls it limited-run but has not announced a precise end date. |
| Chevrolet Equinox | Gas-powered | TechCrunch reported it is currently built in Mexico. | Planned to begin at Fairfax in mid-2027, according to GM. |
| Buick compact SUV | Next-generation compact SUV | TechCrunch reported GM identified it as the Envision, then built in China. GM’s own announcements use the generic description “next-generation Buick compact SUV.” | Planned for Fairfax in 2028, according to GM. |
The Bolt is assembled in Kansas, but GM’s description of its parts as domestically and globally sourced does not mean the vehicle is entirely U.S.-made. GM’s October 2025 Bolt reveal said it would reach Chevrolet dealers in the first quarter of 2026.
When will Chevy Bolt production end?
TechCrunch reported on January 22, 2026, that GM expected Bolt production to end in roughly a year and a half. That is a reported expectation—not a firm final-production date published by GM. The same report quoted a GM spokesperson describing the Bolt as a limited-run model and saying the gas-powered Equinox would follow as Bolt production ramped down. GM’s public statements support the planned handoff but do not specify when the last Bolt will leave the line. A July 2026 GM plant listing still showed the Bolt at Fairfax and said Equinox production there was scheduled to start the following year. Those updates are consistent with a transition, not evidence of a precise cutoff date. GM’s U.S. operations listing gives the plant information.
Is Buick Envision production moving from China to the U.S.?
According to TechCrunch, GM confirmed that the next-generation Buick Envision, then built in China, would move to Fairfax beginning in 2028. GM’s January 2026 announcement independently sets a 2028 target for a next-generation Buick compact SUV at Fairfax, but does not name the model. The Envision identification and its prior Chinese production origin therefore come from TechCrunch’s reporting, while the broad vehicle description and planned year are also in GM’s announcement.

Does the Bolt have a named replacement at Fairfax?
GM said it expects future investment at Fairfax for its next generation of affordable EVs. It has not named a replacement affordable EV model or given a launch date in the cited statements. That leaves later EV production at the plant possible, but it does not establish that another EV will follow the Bolt immediately—or that one is already scheduled.
