GM 1927 is the GM Global Supplier Quality Manual, a shared framework for supplier quality planning, launch readiness, and ongoing quality. Copies available outside GM carry different revision labels, and their presence online does not establish that they are current or controlled. Suppliers should confirm the applicable version through an authorized GM supplier channel before relying on revision-specific requirements.
What is the GM Global Supplier Quality Manual?
GM 1927 describes a common approach for suppliers and GM Supplier Quality Engineers (SQEs) to plan and manage product or service quality. It gives the parties a shared process framework; it should not be treated as a substitute for the controlled documents that apply to a particular supplier, program, or part.

The manual is organized around three broad areas: Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), launch readiness, and current quality. The available historical copies describe these areas as connected work: plan quality, assess readiness for launch, and protect manufacturing and assembly operations while improving quality systematically.
What does GM 1927 cover?
APQP and quality planning
In a September 21, 2009 copy, APQP is presented as a common process for planning and implementing product or service quality. Its purpose is to give suppliers and SQEs a shared way to progress through quality-planning work. The exact activities, deliverables, and requirements can depend on the applicable controlled revision and related documents.

Launch readiness
The same historical copy describes standardized processes and deliverables for assessing supplier launch readiness. Do not infer current gates, deadlines, forms, or thresholds from that description alone: those details need to be checked against the revision GM authorizes for the supplier and program.
Current quality
The historical manual describes current-quality processes intended to protect GM manufacturing and assembly plants and drive systematic improvement across the supply base. This is a broad description of the manual’s purpose, not confirmation that every provision in an older copy remains in force.
PPAP
A 2009 GM 1927 copy describes Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) as a way to check that the supplier understands the engineering design-record and specification requirements and can produce conforming product at the quoted production rate. That is historical wording, not a complete statement of current GM submission rules. The copy refers to AIAG materials; suppliers should verify the applicable editions of the GM-controlled requirements and the relevant AIAG references before preparing a submission.
Which GM 1927 revision applies?
Revision labels on third-party copies do not, by themselves, verify authenticity, approval, or present applicability. The copies identified publicly include different dates and labels:
| Copy identified | What it indicates | Authority and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| September 21, 2009 | Describes APQP, launch, and current-quality processes. | Third-party-hosted historical copy; not evidence of current requirements. |
| 2020, revision 27 | Search-indexed text includes GM QPR, PPAP, and SQMS-related material. | Third-party copy; hosting and date do not establish that it is controlled or currently applicable. |
| 2025, revision 33 | A search-indexed copy carries this label. | Its authenticity and official release status are unverified, and the label does not establish that it is the latest applicable revision. |
The current controlled revision and an official public download route have not been established. Before using a copy to make a compliance decision, confirm the applicable document with an authorized GM supplier channel and GM contacts. Check that the revision is accepted for the supplier’s role, program, commodity, and region, and verify the editions of any external standards or manuals it references.

GM’s public supply-chain information states that IATF 16949 certification is required for GM Tier 1 suppliers. It also describes annual supplier self-verification surveys concerning adherence to GM’s Code, Terms and Conditions, and Supplier Code of Conduct. GM’s Supplier Code of Conduct sets expectations for suppliers and business partners and calls for comparable expectations to be cascaded through their supply chains.
These public statements are useful context for supplier quality and conduct, but they do not establish what a particular GM 1927 revision requires. In particular, the Tier 1 certification statement should not be generalized into a claim that every supplier role has identical requirements, nor should it be attributed to a specific clause in GM 1927.
Which related references should suppliers check?
Search-indexed GM 1927 text names AIAG’s APQP and Control Plan manual and AIAG’s PPAP manual as references. Because both editions and GM-specific requirements can change, use the editions cited in the applicable controlled GM documents and verify that they are current for the work in question. A reference in a third-party copy is not enough to determine which edition or submission details apply.
