General Motors confirmed on October 21, 2025, that it was ending production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. GM said production would not move to another site. The plant’s future use remained under assessment; the company did not announce a permanent plant closure or a replacement product.
What GM announced
The October decision ended BrightDrop production at CAMI after a suspension that began in May 2025. It was not simply an extension of the temporary pause announced earlier in the year: GM said the vans would not be produced at another site. The company said it would assess CAMI for future opportunities. GM Canada’s October 21 announcement did not identify a new product for the facility or say that the plant had permanently closed.
The announcement also marked a change from GM’s August 2024 plan to bring BrightDrop into the Chevrolet brand while continuing production at CAMI. At the time, the company said sales and service would be available through participating Chevrolet commercial EV dealers. GM’s 2024 announcement describes that earlier arrangement.
Why GM says it ended production
GM attributed the decision to a commercial electric delivery van market that developed more slowly than expected, operations at CAMI below capacity, changing regulations, and the elimination of U.S. tax credits. The company framed the move as part of broader adjustments to North American electric-vehicle capacity. These are GM’s stated reasons, not an independent assessment of the market.

GM Canada president and managing director Kristian Aquilina said the decision was driven by market demand and “in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.” That is the company’s characterization of the decision.
How the temporary pause became an end to production
| When | What happened | Status and stated context |
|---|---|---|
| April 11, 2025 | GM announced a planned temporary production halt at CAMI. | The Associated Press reported that GM attributed the pause to lower-than-expected demand and high inventory. At the time, GM said it remained committed to BrightDrop production at CAMI. AP’s April report covered the planned pause and staffing expectations then. |
| May 2025 | The production suspension began. | GM later gave May as the start of the suspension. |
| October 21, 2025 | GM confirmed production was ending at CAMI. | Unlike the earlier temporary pause, the company said BrightDrop production would not move to another site. |
The April report also described union-reported expectations of around 500 indefinite layoffs after a planned October restart on one shift. That was a pause-period staffing account, not a confirmed final job-loss count following GM’s October decision. The company’s later announcement did not provide a final number of jobs lost.

What GM said about employees and support
GM said hourly employees would receive six months of salary, with possible lump-sum payments and other benefits under the collective agreement. It said it would work with Unifor and that the future of the CAMI workforce was uncertain while it assessed next steps with employees, the union, and the Canadian and Ontario governments.
In an October 22 statement, Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie said 1,200 Unifor members and their families were affected. That figure is the mayor’s account of the people affected, not a confirmed count of layoffs. He said the facility’s future production use was unclear and that town staff were exploring ways to mitigate the effects and strengthen the local economy. The Town of Ingersoll published his statement.

What GM’s EV charges do—and do not—show
In its 2026 investor presentation on 2025 results, GM reported $1.8 billion in fourth-quarter 2025 non-cash impairments, largely driven by discontinuing BrightDrop and impairing other EV-related assets. It also reported $4.2 billion in fourth-quarter cash charges associated with contract cancellations and supplier settlements. That cash-charge figure covers broader EV-related adjustments; GM did not identify it as a BrightDrop-only amount. Together, the two categories totaled $6.0 billion in Q4 EV-related charges. GM’s investor presentation provides the company’s figures and categories.
These figures describe GM’s wider electric-vehicle capacity adjustments, not the standalone cost of ending BrightDrop production at CAMI. The presentation does not support attributing the full $4.2 billion in cash charges—or the combined $6.0 billion—to the Ingersoll van program alone.

What remains uncertain about CAMI
GM’s announcement left the plant’s future under assessment. It confirmed that BrightDrop production was ending at CAMI and would not move elsewhere, but did not say the facility was permanently closed, announce a replacement vehicle, or provide a final workforce outcome. The mayor likewise described future production use as unclear in his October 22 statement.
