The company said it would sunset the Ultium name for its batteries and technologies as it moved toward battery choices tailored to individual vehicle programs. It also said Ultium would continue to name its joint-venture manufacturing sites and other facilities.
What GM changed—and what it did not
In October 2024, GM said it would phase out “Ultium” as the brand for its EV batteries and technologies. The decision did not mean that GM was closing battery plants, abandoning EV batteries, or immediately removing the word from every vehicle, facility, or public-facing page. GM said the name would remain in use for its joint-venture manufacturing sites and other facilities. Ars Technica reported the announcement and quoted GM battery executive Kurt Kelty describing the strategy shift.
The scope matters because “Ultium” was broader than a particular battery cell or chemistry. At its March 2020 launch, GM presented Ultium batteries as part of a flexible EV platform; its public glossary also associates the name with batteries and drive units. These are distinct things: a cell is a component, cells assembled together form a pack, and the vehicle platform and drive units are other parts of the EV system. GM’s original announcement described the platform framing.
Why GM moved away from one battery formula
GM’s stated rationale was to stop relying on a one-size-fits-all approach and choose batteries for individual vehicle programs. Kelty told Ars Technica: “It now makes business sense to transition from one-size-fits-all to new program-specific batteries.” The reported plan included exploring different cell formats and chemistries, rather than assuming one configuration would suit every vehicle.

- IMPORTANT: RED 2-PIN CONNECTOR REQUIRED – This battery ONLY works with the red 2-pin connector shown in the product photos. Many ride-on toys use similar-looking connectors that are not compatible. Compare your connector carefully before purchasing.
- IMPORTANT: VERIFY BATTERY SIZE BEFORE PURCHASE – Battery dimensions are 5.9 x 2.5 x 3.9 inches (151 x 65 x 99 mm). Measure your existing battery and battery compartment before ordering. This battery may not fit all ride-on vehicles.
- HIGHER 9.5AH CAPACITY FOR LONGER PLAYTIME – Premium sealed lead acid battery provides extended runtime compared to many standard 7AH batteries while delivering reliable power for compatible ride-on vehicles.
- INCLUDES REPLACEABLE 40A FUSE HARNESS – Includes SafeAMP 12V 9.5AH SLA battery, red 2-pin connector harness, and replaceable 40-amp fuse for added protection and convenient installation.
- DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBLE 12V RIDE-ON VEHICLES – Intended as a replacement battery for ride-on toys using the red 2-pin connector and requiring a battery measuring approximately 151 x 65 x 99 mm.
That is a strategy change, not evidence that every vehicle will get a unique battery or that a particular chemistry will replace all others. Battery chemistry describes the materials and electrochemical design; cell format describes its physical shape. Neither is interchangeable with the Ultium brand.
What the later LMR plan shows
GM’s September 29, 2026 announcement offers a later example of the program-specific direction: it said it plans to produce prismatic lithium manganese rich (LMR) cells for future vehicles at its Spring Hill facility. Prismatic describes the cell format; LMR describes the chemistry. The planned cells are not evidence that GM has already put them into production or vehicles. GM’s announcement presents the figures as plans and company claims:

- GM says its planned LMR cells are designed to offer 33% greater energy density than LFP cells at comparable cost. This is GM’s design claim, not an independently verified production result.
- GM projects that construction and upgrades at Spring Hill will create 500 jobs; the company says the facility currently has 1,200 employees.
- GM expects the facility upgrades to be completed in 2028. This is a forward-looking schedule, not a completed milestone.
The announcement uses the name Ultium Cells LLC for GM’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution. That company name and the continued naming of manufacturing sites can coexist with GM’s stated plan to sunset Ultium as a battery and technology brand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some GM pages still say “Ultium”
GM’s public EV glossary, accessed October 8, 2026, still defines Ultium broadly as a brand for next-generation batteries, drive units, and platform. The page does not display a publication date. That wording is not fully aligned with the narrower sunset announced in 2024, so the public-facing transition appears uneven. It is more accurate to describe the change as scoped and evolving than to claim every use of “Ultium” has already disappeared.

How to read GM’s original Ultium claims
GM’s 2020 launch release described a range of 50–200 kWh battery options, range of up to 400 miles or more, and charging capabilities as targets for the flexible platform. These were company-stated targets at launch, not current results for every GM EV or a guarantee for a specific vehicle. The distinction is useful when comparing the original common-platform framing with later announcements about different chemistries, form factors, and vehicle applications.
For any specific model, check that vehicle’s current specifications rather than assuming it uses a particular battery just because an older GM page calls the technology “Ultium.” A brand label alone does not establish the model’s cell chemistry, cell format, capacity, or production status.
