Two local companies operating Gloria Jean’s Coffees stores in Perth’s northern suburbs entered liquidation in May 2024. The Warwick operator, Gibson Retail W Pty Ltd, entered liquidation on 7 May; the company associated with the Joondalup store, Macauley Gibson Ventures Pty Ltd, followed on 21 May. Mackay Goodwin was appointed liquidator by court appointment on 22 May. The reported insolvencies concerned those operators—not Gloria Jean’s as a whole.
Which companies went into liquidation?
PerthNow reported that the two stores were operated by separate companies. The Joondalup business had used the Gloria Jean’s Coffees Joondalup name since 2008, according to the article’s account of ABN records; Gibson Retail W Pty Ltd operated under the Gloria Jean’s Coffees Warwick business name.
| Associated store | Operating company | Reported liquidation date | Later registry information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warwick | Gibson Retail W Pty Ltd | 7 May 2024 | ABN Lookup shows the company’s ABN cancelled from 10 September 2025. The record was extracted on 11 June 2026. |
| Joondalup | Macauley Gibson Ventures Pty Ltd | 21 May 2024 | A current registry outcome was not established. ASIC says company information is available through its registers and insolvency and deregistration notices can be searched through the ASIC-sponsored notices site. |
PerthNow reported the liquidation dates and company details on 31 May 2024. The Warwick company’s later ABN status is listed by ABN Lookup. For company records and notices, ASIC explains its registers and insolvency information.
Why did the operators go into liquidation?
The appointed liquidator, Mackay Goodwin director Mathieu Tribut, attributed the situation to losses over the previous two years and growing debt to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). He said: “We tried to restructure the business but there were insufficient funds and therefore we had no other option but to go with liquidation,” as quoted by PerthNow.
#1 Best Overall
PerthNow reported that the ATO, shopping-centre landlords and potentially the franchise were understood to be creditors. The report did not state a dollar amount for the losses or ATO debt, so no total can be confirmed from that account.
What was reported about employees?
PerthNow reported that each store had about five employees and that staff had been let go before the liquidator’s appointment. It also said they were being assisted with Fair Entitlement Guarantee payments for any outstanding entitlements. The approximate staffing figure and assistance describe what was reported at the time, not a verified final headcount or current payment status.

Does this mean Gloria Jean’s closed all its stores?
No. The reported liquidations were of two local operating companies. They do not establish that the Gloria Jean’s brand, its other franchise locations, or the company behind the wider brand entered liquidation. Likewise, the Warwick operator’s ABN cancellation does not establish whether a café currently trades at that former site. The available information also does not confirm the present status of Macauley Gibson Ventures Pty Ltd or the current use of the Joondalup site.
