GitLab appointed Bill Staples as its CEO on December 5, 2024. Staples, the former New Relic chief executive, also joined GitLab’s board. Co-founder Sid Sijbrandij stepped away from day-to-day management and became executive chair while focusing on cancer treatment.
This was a December 2024 leadership transition—not a new 2026 appointment. GitLab’s leadership and board pages, checked against company disclosures available through August 16, 2026, still list Staples as CEO and Sijbrandij as executive chair.
What GitLab announced
GitLab said Staples became CEO effective immediately on December 5, 2024, and joined its board. Sijbrandij remained involved as executive chair rather than leaving the company entirely.
The company said Sijbrandij was making the change to focus on his health and cancer treatment. In his public statement, Sijbrandij said his treatments were going well and that his cancer was not metastatic at that time. Those medical details should be understood as information he disclosed publicly, not as an independent medical assessment.

The announcement did not describe the change as a performance dismissal or hostile board action. It presented the move as a founder-to-successor handoff designed to preserve continuity while giving Sijbrandij time to focus on treatment.
Who is Bill Staples?
Staples is an enterprise-software and developer-platform executive, not simply an outside corporate manager. Before joining GitLab, he was CEO of New Relic. Earlier in his career, he held executive roles at Microsoft and Adobe.
GitLab described Staples as having nearly 30 years of experience building developer platforms and serving developers as customers. The company also credited his New Relic tenure with revenue growth, improved profitability, broader platform adoption, and increased enterprise value—claims that should be treated as GitLab’s characterization rather than as an independently established causal measurement.
TechCrunch reported that Staples led Azure application-platform work at Microsoft and held Adobe roles involving cloud services and analytics tooling. That background aligns with GitLab’s customer base: software teams and enterprises buying tools for source control, delivery automation, security, compliance, and operations.
TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report provides additional background on Staples.
Why Staples was a logical successor
GitLab was already trying to scale from a source-code and collaboration product into a broader enterprise DevSecOps platform. That required more than technical product expertise. It required selling to large organizations, coordinating multiple product areas, improving operating discipline, and turning a wide platform into a repeatable commercial business.

Staples brought experience running a public enterprise-software company, alongside a career focused on developer tools, cloud platforms, analytics, and enterprise customers. GitLab’s board specifically cited his record of scaling software organizations, bringing teams together, and focusing on innovation.
His appointment therefore suggested professionalization and enterprise scaling, but not necessarily a rejection of GitLab’s founding culture. Sijbrandij’s continuing role as executive chair preserved a direct link to the company’s origins and strategy.

In its December 2024 announcement, GitLab said it served more than 10,000 customers and had more than $750 million in run-rate revenue. It also said the platform had more than 40 million registered users and was used by more than 50% of the Fortune 100.
These figures came from GitLab and should not be read as independently audited market-share measurements. They nevertheless show why the leadership change mattered: GitLab was managing an enterprise platform with substantial commercial scale, not an early-stage developer project.
The company’s stated focus included:
- DevSecOps and software-delivery automation
- Developer productivity and operational efficiency
- Application security and compliance
- Digital transformation
- AI-assisted software development
What changed after the appointment?
GitLab’s later disclosures show Staples continuing in the CEO role. GitLab reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $955.2 million, up 26% year over year. It also said annual recurring revenue exceeded $1 billion and adjusted free cash flow was approximately $220 million.
Those figures refer to different measures: fiscal 2026 revenue was $955.2 million, while the $1 billion figure referred to annual recurring revenue. GitLab’s fiscal 2026 ended January 31, 2026.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, ended April 30, 2026, GitLab reported revenue of $264.2 million, up 23% year over year. These later results do not prove that Staples alone caused the company’s performance, but they demonstrate that the transition did not mark an immediate retreat from growth or platform investment.

GitLab’s strategic direction under Staples
GitLab’s post-appointment messaging increasingly centers on AI agents and what it calls intelligent orchestration. The strategy goes beyond an AI assistant that suggests code. GitLab is positioning AI across planning, source control, testing, security analysis, compliance, deployment, and operations.
The company’s GitLab Duo Agent Platform is intended to support multi-step workflows, including planning, security analysis, merge-request creation, pipeline fixes, data insights, and CI/CD modernization. GitLab’s broader pitch is that one platform can coordinate software work across the lifecycle while retaining governance and security controls.
That positioning has two important implications:
- For enterprise buyers: AI is being presented as part of a governed software-delivery system, not just a code-generation feature.
- For budgets: usage-based AI billing means customers need to monitor consumption and establish spending controls rather than assume all AI activity is covered by the base subscription.
AI productivity and delivery benefits remain strategic claims and goals, not universal outcomes guaranteed for every development organization.
What customers and investors should watch
1. Platform consolidation
GitLab competes with GitHub and Microsoft’s developer services, Atlassian’s Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, security vendors, and composable toolchains built around projects such as Jenkins. Its central argument is that organizations can consolidate planning, repositories, CI/CD, security, compliance, and operations in one platform.
The trade-off is familiar: consolidation can reduce integration and governance overhead, but a single platform may offer less flexibility than a best-of-breed collection of specialized tools.
2. AI-agent adoption and cost control
GitLab’s move toward agents creates potential productivity benefits, but customers must evaluate permissions, data governance, human review, reliability, and usage costs. An agent that can modify merge requests or pipelines needs stronger controls than a simple autocomplete feature.

3. Security and compliance differentiation
GitLab’s enterprise case depends partly on integrating software delivery with application security, software supply-chain controls, vulnerability management, compliance, and governance. Regulated organizations should assess whether those controls meet their requirements rather than relying on broad “DevSecOps” labels.
4. Founder continuity and execution
Sijbrandij’s executive-chair role provides continuity, while Staples is responsible for day-to-day execution. The important governance question is how effectively GitLab preserves its product vision while scaling enterprise operations and managing a more complex AI platform.

Buyers should also distinguish among GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated deployments. A 30-day Ultimate trial is available for GitLab.com and Self-Managed, although trial conditions and support limitations apply. Self-Managed evaluation requires relevant Linux and GitLab administration experience.
For teams already committed to GitHub, Microsoft identity and Azure, or Jira and Confluence, respectively, GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, or Bitbucket may involve less migration friction. A Jenkins-based toolchain may suit organizations that prioritize customization and already have the operational expertise to maintain integrations. The right comparison is not repository hosting alone; it is security, CI/CD, governance, AI, migration effort, and total operating cost.

Bottom line
GitLab’s appointment of Bill Staples was a December 5, 2024 handoff from founder-led management to an experienced enterprise-software operator. Sijbrandij remained executive chair, preserving founder continuity while focusing on his health.
The longer-term significance is strategic. Staples is leading GitLab as it tries to turn an integrated DevSecOps platform into an AI- and agent-oriented system for enterprise software delivery. The opportunity is broader platform adoption; the risks are execution complexity, AI governance, usage costs, and whether customers value consolidation enough to change established toolchains.
