GitHub reached its goal of having 100 million developers on the platform by 2025 in January 2023—two years ahead of schedule. The company reported more than 180 million developers on GitHub in its 2025 Octoverse. These are GitHub platform figures, not a count of every software developer worldwide.
What GitHub predicted in 2020
In its 2020 State of the Octoverse, GitHub said more than 56 million developers were using the platform and expected that number to double to 100 million by 2025. GitHub later said it had set the goal in 2019. The forecast concerned developers on GitHub—not the total global population of people who write software.
GitHub’s January 25, 2023 announcement quoted then-CEO Thomas Dohmke: “In 2019, we set a goal to have 100 million developers using GitHub by 2025—because we know when more developers come together in a single place, incredible things happen.”
When GitHub reached 100 million developers
On January 25, 2023, GitHub announced that more than 100 million developers were using the platform, saying it had reached the goal two years ahead of schedule. GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse later recapped that the milestone was reached in early 2023.

How many developers use GitHub now?
GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse, published October 28, 2025 and updated February 28, 2026, reported more than 180 million developers on the platform. The progression in GitHub’s published figures is:
| Report or announcement | GitHub’s figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 State of the Octoverse | More than 56 million developers; expectation of 100 million by 2025 | Starting figure and forecast |
| January 2023 announcement | More than 100 million developers | Milestone reached two years before the target year |
| 2025 Octoverse | More than 180 million developers | Later GitHub platform count |
What the developer count does—and does not—tell you
The figures describe people GitHub counts as developers using its platform. They should not be read as a census of professional software developers, a measure of full-time employment, or a count of everyone who codes worldwide. The cited reports do not provide a detailed methodology for defining “developer” or deduplicating individuals, so the numbers are best treated as GitHub’s own platform statistics rather than a precise measure of the global workforce.
