The ruling also addressed control of the women’s images and videos and ordered takedown-related relief. It was a state civil judgment, separate from later federal criminal cases and restitution orders.

Why did the judge rule against GirlsDoPorn-related defendants?
The consolidated California civil lawsuits, first filed in 2016, alleged fraud, breach of contract over distribution of the videos, and misappropriation of images. The women said they were misled about whether recordings would be posted online. After a bench trial, Judge Enright ruled for all 22 plaintiffs and against 13 defendants, including individuals and affiliated businesses. The reporting described the businesses as treated as a single business entity for liability. The contemporaneous report and the plaintiffs’ law firm’s case summary describe the civil case and relief.
What did the civil judgment require beyond money?
The relief addressed the images and the practices used to recruit participants. Reporting and the plaintiffs’ law firm summary say the court granted the women ownership rights to their images appearing in the defendants’ videos and ordered defendants to take down the videos and seek removal from other websites. The court also imposed conditions for future recruitment and use of personal information:
#1 Best Overall
- Recruitment advertisements had to disclose that recordings would be distributed online.
- Prospective participants had to receive legal agreements in advance.
- Defendants needed permission before using participants’ names or personal information.
These details are reported in the Los Angeles Times/San Diego Union-Tribune account and the plaintiffs’ law firm summary; the full state-court decision is not available in the cited sources.
How is the civil award different from later federal restitution?
The $12.7 million was a civil award to 22 plaintiffs. Later federal proceedings were separate, involved a broader group of victims, and produced their own orders. The figures describe different proceedings and should not be combined as one award to the 22 women.
| Proceeding | Who or what it covered | Outcome reported |
|---|---|---|
| California state civil case, January 2020 | 22 women who sued GirlsDoPorn-related defendants | $9.45 million compensatory plus $3.3 million punitive damages; $12.7 million total reported. Los Angeles Times/San Diego Union-Tribune reporting. |
| Separate federal restitution order | Victims in the federal criminal case against Ruben Andre Garcia, a broader group than the 22 civil plaintiffs | Approximately $18 million in restitution. The order also gave victims rights to GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys images and videos and said purported model releases and rights transfers were void. U.S. Department of Justice. |
The Justice Department said hundreds of women in the United States and Canada were recruited through material misrepresentations, including assurances that videos would not be posted online, released in the United States, or found by people they knew. The department also reported that the GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys websites generated at least $17 million in revenue; that revenue figure is not a damages award to the 22 civil plaintiffs. DOJ account of the restitution order.

The federal criminal proceedings were distinct from Judge Enright’s civil ruling. In September 2025, Michael Pratt received a 27-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to sex-trafficking offenses. The Justice Department described the criminal scheme as involving hundreds of women and deceptive modeling advertisements, false assurances about online publication, and coercion during shoots. The DOJ sentencing release reports that outcome.
