Gilbert’s Fresh Market announced in May 2024 that it would leave Southlands Boulevarde in Willetton after more than 16 years. PerthNow reported the lease would end at the beginning of August and that the store was expected to be gone by July, but the available sources do not establish its exact final trading date. The business and centre management gave different accounts of the lease discussions.
What Gilbert’s and HomeCo said about the lease
The owner’s account
Gilbert’s owner Charlie Opferkuch told PerthNow that lease-extension discussions began earlier in 2024. He said the business was told it could stay if it also took on space associated with The Reject Shop tenancy. Gilbert’s declined, he said, because it focused on fresh food and could not take on more space. Opferkuch said the business later submitted a proposal for surrounding space. He told PerthNow, “We really didn’t want to leave,” and added, “But it’s out of our hands at this stage.”
HomeCo’s account
A HomeCo spokesperson told PerthNow that the centre’s local team had engaged with Gilbert’s on renewal and expansion on numerous occasions and had offered what it considered reasonable opportunities to remain. The report does not independently resolve the difference between the owner’s description of communication and HomeCo’s account of its engagement. The headline’s “little communication” framing reflects the family business’s characterization, not an independently established finding.
What was planned for the supermarket space
In May 2024, Southlands Boulevarde said Joy Mall would relocate within the centre. HomeCo described the plan as an expanded Asian supermarket offer, including fresh fruit and vegetables. The report does not establish that Joy Mall would take Gilbert’s former tenancy.

What is known about the timing
PerthNow reported on 30 May 2024 that Gilbert’s had announced its departure the previous week. The lease was due to end at the beginning of August, while the story said the store would be gone by July. Those are the timing details reported at the time, not confirmation of an exact closing day.
PerthNow also reported that HomeCo. Daily Needs purchased the Willetton shopping centre in December 2023 for A$92.5 million, citing ASX records, with settlement in February 2024. That background does not establish why the lease discussions ended as they did.

Where Gilbert’s directs customers now
Gilbert’s current official FAQ lists its Hilton and Midland stores. The Hilton business page gives the address as 308 South St, Hilton WA 6163, and describes online click-and-collect and fresh-food services. These current business pages do not record the Willetton store’s final trading date.
