GIFT Nifty replaced SGX Nifty on July 3, 2023. The Nifty derivatives began trading and matching on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat, through the NSE IX–SGX GIFT Connect. In the arrangement described at launch, SGX-member orders route to NSE IX for execution, while SGX manages clearing and settlement. The transition changed the venue and market infrastructure; it did not mean the two names referred to unrelated Nifty exposures.

What changed?

Before the transition, the Nifty derivatives commonly called SGX Nifty traded on Singapore Exchange. From July 3, 2023, the contracts were rebranded as GIFT Nifty and began trading on NSE IX in GIFT City. NSE IX described the transition as part of the NSE IX–SGX GIFT Connect. NSE IX’s transition and launch announcements and SGX’s July 3, 2023 launch notice give the dated details.

The key distinction is between where trades are executed and who handles clearing and settlement. SGX’s launch notice says trading and matching take place in GIFT City, with SGX-member orders routed to NSE IX for execution; SGX manages clearing and settlement for the Connect contracts in Singapore. That describes the SGX-member route in the launch arrangement, not necessarily the path every participant uses.

How the two setups compare

Aspect SGX Nifty before transition GIFT Nifty / Connect
Name and trading venue Nifty derivatives traded on Singapore Exchange. Rebranded GIFT Nifty; trading and matching take place on NSE IX in GIFT City.
Order route Market access through SGX. SGX-member orders route to NSE IX for execution. Exchange materials also describe participation through GIFT IFSC members; the applicable route depends on the participant.
Clearing and settlement Not established here beyond the fact that the contracts traded on SGX. SGX manages clearing and settlement for Connect contracts, according to its launch notice.
Initial index family Nifty index derivatives. The initial launch family included Nifty 50, Nifty Bank, Nifty IT and Nifty Financial Services futures and options.
Trading hours NSE’s June 2023 release said GIFT Nifty’s almost 21-hour access was longer than SGX Nifty’s then-available hours. An NSE IX FAQ dated April 2024 gives broad market timings, but directs members to product-specific schedules. Check the live schedule rather than relying on a general or launch-period comparison.
Access and eligibility Requirements depend on the applicable market and intermediary; no complete current eligibility comparison is established here. Verify access with your broker and the current exchange and regulatory rules.

The initial four-index product list is documented in NSE IX’s July 2023 launch-period release and NSE IFSC circular 904, dated June 17, 2022. It should not be read as a definitive list of all contracts currently listed.

What the change means for traders

Check the contract and venue, not just the familiar name

GIFT Nifty is the successor name for the Nifty derivatives that moved under the Connect arrangement. When checking a quote, order or contract, confirm the listed product, exchange, expiry and applicable specifications. Do not assume historical details from SGX carry over unchanged: current contract terms and the complete expiry calendar should be verified in NSE IX’s current specifications and circulars.

Confirm your access route

SGX-member orders routing to NSE IX is one described route. Exchange materials also refer to direct participation through GIFT IFSC members. The available information does not establish a universal list of eligible jurisdictions, account types or brokers, so check your own broker and the rules that apply to your account before planning a trade.

  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

Verify product-specific hours

NSE IX’s Connect FAQ, dated April 2024, gives general market timings of 06:30 to 02:45 the following day, India Standard Time, with a 06:15 pre-open. It directs members to the exchange’s timing page for product-specific schedules. These general FAQ timings are not confirmation of the current hours for every GIFT Nifty contract. Check the NSE IX Connect FAQ and the current product schedule before placing an order.

Do not treat the price as a guaranteed cash-market forecast

Extended trading access means a GIFT Nifty quote may be available outside Indian cash-market hours. The exchange and launch materials establish the instrument and its infrastructure; they do not establish that its price reliably predicts the next Indian cash-market open. A quote is market information, not a guaranteed outcome or a trading signal by itself.

How to interpret activity and liquidity claims

Historical activity figures show what was reported on particular dates, not what a trader can expect at any hour or order size. NSE IX reported more than 214,000 contracts and US$8.5 billion turnover on July 24, 2023, describing it as a record first-session single-day activity figure at that time. It reported 33,570 contracts and US$1.21 billion on July 3, 2023, the first day of full-scale operations. These are exchange-reported historical figures, not current turnover or a guarantee of liquidity. See the NSE IX press-release listing.

The NSE IX press-release listing also displayed US$23.67 billion in single-day turnover and 512,023 contracts for September 25, 2026, as a record at the time of the listing reviewed. Because the listing can change, treat this as a dated exchange-reported figure and check the underlying release for context. Aggregate turnover does not tell you whether a specific contract is liquid at the time you trade or whether your order size can be executed without affecting price. NSE IX’s official market information is the primary place to check current exchange data.

Bottom line for a trader comparing the names

Think of GIFT Nifty as the post-transition name and setup for the Nifty derivatives formerly traded as SGX Nifty: since July 3, 2023, trading and matching have been on NSE IX in GIFT City, with SGX handling clearing and settlement for the Connect contracts described at launch. For an actual trade, use current exchange information to confirm the specific contract, hours and access route rather than relying on old SGX references or broad claims about prediction and liquidity.
