Germany is acquiring 60 Boeing CH-47F Block II helicopters for the Luftwaffe. The German aircraft are the Standard Range, Air-to-Air Refuelling configuration, known as CH-47F (DE); deliveries are expected to begin in autumn 2027 and finish by the end of 2032.
What Germany ordered—and what the U.S. Army contract claim gets wrong
Germany ordered 60 CH-47F Block II Standard Range, Air-to-Air Refuelling (SR AAR) helicopters in July 2023. The Luftwaffe calls its version the CH-47F (DE). The U.S. Army is involved in the Foreign Military Sales and contracting context, but public information cited here does not establish an Army contract award covering the full German order. The headline claim that the Army contracted Boeing to produce all 60 therefore overstates what is documented.
A separate U.S. Army award reported in May 2026 concerned six remanufactured CH-47F Block II helicopters for a U.S. procurement lot, not Germany’s 60-aircraft purchase. That award was valued at $326,050,000. U.S. Army Lot 6 award
When will Germany receive the Chinooks?
Production of the German aircraft began at Boeing’s Philadelphia facility in May 2025. The Bundeswehr reports that final assembly of the first aircraft began in April 2026. It expects the first aircraft to arrive in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the final delivery in the fourth quarter of 2032. Bundeswehr production and delivery update

The Bundeswehr describes the CH-53’s service life as ending in 2030, so the planned Chinook deliveries extend beyond that stated endpoint. The available schedule does not explain how Germany will manage any resulting transition or capability gap.
What will the CH-47F do for the Luftwaffe?
The Chinook is intended to take over heavy-transport duties from the CH-53 as that aircraft reaches the end of its service life. Bundeswehr-listed roles include carrying personnel, material and vehicles, as well as medical evacuation, rescue, recovery of isolated personnel and support for special forces. What do the published cost figures mean?
The two official figures use different currencies and describe different contexts; they should not be treated as equivalent measures of a final contract price.

How Germany is preparing to operate and maintain the fleet
Boeing’s German Chinook industrial team includes Aero-Bildung, Airbus Helicopters, Boeing, ESG and Lufthansa Technik. Boeing says the partners are supporting the Luftwaffe and helping establish operations, maintenance and training capability in Germany. Boeing industrial-team announcement

On July 22, 2026, Boeing said it and Lufthansa Technik Defense had agreed general contractual terms for future maintenance of the German fleet. The framework lays groundwork for a main contract and a flexible network of spare-parts stores, with Lufthansa Technik expected to support consumables and expendables.
