Orders excluding large-scale orders edged down 0.1% month on month. The August figures are provisional.
Why did German industrial orders fall in August 2026?
The main cause was a sharp month-to-month reversal in other transport equipment, a category that includes ships, railway rolling stock and aircraft. In July, orders in that sector had surged 129.4% after an exceptionally high volume of large orders. In August, they fell 61.5%. Destatis said the decline in this sector explained almost all of the negative development in manufacturing orders.
Because July’s unusually high orders raised the comparison base, the August headline drop makes the change look broader than it was. The measure excluding large-scale orders fell just 0.1% from July, indicating near-stability over that single month—not that demand was uniformly strong.
What the figures show, by comparison period
| Measure | August 2026 result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Total manufacturing orders | -10.6% month on month; +2.7% year on year | Month-on-month data are seasonally and calendar adjusted; year-on-year data are calendar adjusted. |
| Orders excluding large-scale orders | -0.1% month on month | Shows a nearly flat monthly change after removing the large-order effect. |
| Total orders over June–August | +1.3% versus the preceding three months | The three-month comparison was positive overall. |
| Orders excluding large-scale orders over June–August | -2.6% versus the preceding three months | The underlying three-month comparison was weaker than the headline three-month figure. |
These measures answer different questions. The monthly comparison captures the sharp reversal from July; the three-month window smooths some of that volatility. On that longer view, total orders were higher, while orders excluding large-scale contracts were lower.

Which types of orders declined?
The August declines extended across the main order categories. Destatis reported the following month-on-month changes for Germany, seasonally and calendar adjusted:
- Capital goods: -15.3%.
- Intermediate goods: -2.6%.
- Consumer goods: -7.3%.
Orders from domestic customers fell 17.3%, while foreign orders fell 5.4%. Within foreign orders, euro-area demand was down 5.4% and demand from outside the euro area was down 5.5%.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy also pointed to volatility associated with state procurement, saying domestic capital-goods demand fell sharply after earlier increases linked to government large orders. That is the ministry’s interpretation of the pattern, rather than a separate finding in Destatis’s statistical measure.
How can orders fall while industrial production rises?
Destatis reported on 7 October that industrial production rose 2.0% month on month in August 2026. This does not contradict the fall in orders: orders measure incoming demand, while production measures output made during the period. Existing orders, delivery schedules and the time needed to turn an order into finished goods can cause the two indicators to move differently.
How Destatis measures manufacturing orders
The order index is real, or price-adjusted, and covers selected manufacturing branches classified under WZ 2008. Its base year is 2021=100, and Destatis uses X13 JDemetra+ for seasonal and calendar adjustment. Month-on-month figures are adjusted for seasonality and calendar effects; year-on-year figures are calendar adjusted. The August release is provisional.
