There is no reliable current figure for Geoffrey Rush’s net worth in the available public sources. Reported career earnings, a payment for one film role, and damages from his defamation case are different kinds of numbers; none establishes his assets minus liabilities today.

Is Geoffrey Rush’s net worth publicly known?

No reliable current net-worth calculation is established by the sources reviewed. A net-worth figure would require a current accounting of assets and liabilities, which the available reporting does not provide. Celebrity estimates should not be treated as verified financial statements.

The most substantial reported career figure comes from material disclosed in court submissions. ABC reported that Rush earned almost A$38 million between 2003 and 2017. This is a historical gross-earnings figure, not evidence of how much he retained after taxes, fees, spending, investments, or other obligations. ABC News’s 2019 report on the damages hearing described the figure as coming from the submissions.

What the reported figures refer to

Figure What it refers to What it does not establish
Almost A$38 million Rush’s reported earnings from 2003 to 2017, cited in court-submission material reported by ABC in 2019. Current wealth or money retained after expenses, tax, and liabilities.
A$2 million Reported payment for Rush’s role in the 2016 film Gods of Egypt, as disclosed in the same submission material reported by ABC. Annual income or net worth.
A$850,000 Initial defamation damages awarded by the Federal Court in 2019 for harm to reputation. A valuation of Rush’s assets or total career earnings.
A further A$2 million Amount the parties agreed in May 2019 for lost earnings, as reported by ABC. A court-assessed finding on the evidence of lost income.
A$4.8 million and A$20.3 million Alternative future-loss scenarios attributed to accountant Terrence Potter, based on modeled reductions in future acting work over ten years. An amount awarded, received, or a net-worth estimate.

How the defamation damages relate to his finances

In April 2019, the Federal Court awarded A$850,000 in initial damages in Rush’s defamation case, relating to harm to reputation. Lost-income damages were left to be resolved separately. ABC later reported that the parties agreed on a further A$2 million for lost earnings. Sydney media-law specialist Sophie Dawson told ABC Radio PM that the additional amount was agreed rather than assessed by the court: “it’s an agreed figure; and that means that it is not a legal precedent, because the court didn’t assess the evidence on loss and make a decision.” ABC’s 23 May 2019 report gives the agreement and Dawson’s explanation.

Those damages are legal payments tied to the case, not a personal balance sheet. Nor should they be combined with past career earnings to produce a net-worth total: the figures concern different periods and purposes, and the lost-earnings amount was agreed rather than judicially determined.

Why future-loss calculations are not a net-worth estimate

Rush’s legal team argued that future economic loss could reach A$25.3 million. The submissions included alternative scenarios attributed to accountant Terrence Potter, modeling a 25% or 75% reduction in future acting work over a ten-year period. The reported scenario figures of A$4.8 million and A$20.3 million were hypothetical calculations based on assumptions about future work—not court awards, confirmed income losses, or a valuation of Rush’s wealth.

What the court record says

ABC reported that Justice Michael Wigney found the publisher and journalist had failed to prove the published imputations true. In describing the publication, the judge called it “recklessly irresponsible pieces of sensationalist journalism of the very worst kind,” as quoted in ABC News’s 11 April 2019 report.

The Federal Court’s online file for Rush v HarperCollins lists case materials and judgments. For a detailed account of any appeal outcome, rely on the relevant judgment itself; an ABC preview published on the date an appeal decision was expected is not, on its own, proof of that outcome. ABC’s appeal-day preview should be read in that limited context.
