The total excluded OpenAI’s $6.6 billion funding round. US-based companies accounted for $2.9 billion across 127 deals.
What the $3.9 billion figure measures
TechCrunch reported on October 20, 2024, that PitchBook figures put investment in generative AI startups at $3.9 billion across 206 deals from July through September 2024. This is venture funding for a startup category over one quarter—not total spending on AI, all private investment in AI, public-market investment, or AI-company revenue. TechCrunch’s report attributes the figures to PitchBook.
The published report does not provide the underlying dataset, the exact category definition, deal-inclusion rules, or reporting cut-off. The $3.9 billion should therefore be treated as the reported PitchBook total, not as a figure whose methodology can be independently assessed from the article.
Does the total include OpenAI?
No. TechCrunch explicitly says its $3.9 billion total excludes OpenAI’s $6.6 billion funding round. OpenAI announced that round in October 2024, after Q3 ended; the Associated Press covered the announcement. The round is not part of the reported generative-AI startup total. How much went to US-based companies?
PitchBook figures reported by TechCrunch assign $2.9 billion across 127 deals to US-based companies. That is a geographic subset of the reported Q3 total, not a separate estimate of all US AI investment.
Which startups raised notable rounds?
TechCrunch named several Q3 financings across different areas of generative AI and related tools:
Rank #2
- Magic: $320 million in August for the coding assistant.
- Glean: $260 million in September for the enterprise search provider.
- Hebbia: $130 million in July for the business analytics firm.
- Moonshot AI: $300 million in August for the China-based company.
- Sakana AI: a $214 million tranche in September for the Japan-based company.
These are examples cited in TechCrunch’s coverage; they are not an exhaustive deal list, and their amounts should not be added up as if they independently explain the full $3.9 billion total. The article does not establish the precise treatment of each round under PitchBook’s category rules.
How does Q3 compare with earlier investment?
Stanford HAI’s 2024 AI Index, using Quid data, reports $25.2 billion in generative AI private investment for all of 2023—nearly nine times the 2022 level—and 99 newly funded generative AI companies in 2023, compared with 56 in 2022. These are annual figures from a different data series, not a directly comparable quarterly PitchBook measure. Stanford HAI, 2024 AI Index
Other Q3 reporting covers a broader AI field. KPMG’s Venture Pulse, for example, cites $1 billion raised by Safe Superintelligence and $640 million raised by AI-chip developer Groq during the quarter. Those broader AI examples do not show that either full round was included in the narrower generative AI total. KPMG Venture Pulse
What to check when comparing AI funding figures
Quarterly totals can differ because reports may count different things. Before comparing them, check:

- Category: generative AI startups or the wider AI industry.

- Deal definition: what qualifies as an investment or financing deal.
- Large rounds: whether unusually large financings, such as OpenAI’s, are included.
- Measure: announced startup financing, private investment, or another metric.
For the $3.9 billion figure, TechCrunch identifies PitchBook as the source but does not publish enough detail to resolve those underlying inclusion rules.

The reported total indicates substantial venture funding for generative AI startups in Q3 2024, with most of the amount in the cited US-based subset. It does not, by itself, measure whether those investments will produce profitable businesses, how much customers spent on AI, or the financial performance of the companies involved.

Brendan Burke, PitchBook’s senior analyst of emerging tech, told TechCrunch: “Large customers are rolling out production systems that take advantage of startup tooling and open source models,” and “The latest wave of models shows that new generations of models are possible and may excel in scientific fields, data retrieval, and code execution.” These are Burke’s assessments, not measured outcomes.
