What happens to Gene Hackman’s estate? Reports on probate documents say Hackman’s 2005 will left his estate to his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and Arakawa’s 2005 will directed her estate to him. But those reciprocal provisions do not reveal who ultimately receives the couple’s assets: reporting says the terms of two associated trusts were not public. The latest status located in reporting, published July 24, 2026, said Hackman’s probate estate remained open while federal tax matters were completed.

What do the reported wills say?

The Associated Press reported on March 31, 2025, citing probate documents, that Hackman signed an updated will in 2005 leaving his estate to Arakawa. Her will, signed the same year, directed her estate to him. These are descriptions of the reported documents, not quotations from the wills themselves. Associated Press report, March 31, 2025.

That reciprocal arrangement identifies the spouse each will named as recipient. It does not, on its own, establish what happens when both spouses have died. The AP reported that documents for two associated trusts were not public and that their beneficiaries and the division of assets were unclear.

Who inherits Gene Hackman’s estate?

The public reporting cited here does not establish the final distribution. It does not show who the trusts name as beneficiaries or how their assets are to be divided. It therefore does not support a firm claim that Hackman’s children inherit the estate, are excluded from every asset, or that a particular charity receives it.

A will is only part of the picture: some assets may be administered through trusts rather than passed under a will, and the trust terms were not available in the reporting. Without the complete instruments and relevant filings, the ultimate beneficiaries and distribution remain unresolved.

What is the latest reported status of the estate?

A July 24, 2026 Newsmax Wires report, citing Santa Fe County probate records, said Hackman’s estate remained open after a court notice of inactivity. It reported that personal representative Julia Peters asked to keep the estate open because federal tax matters were pending, after an estate tax return had been filed with the IRS. This is a secondary account of court records, not a direct review of the underlying July 2026 docket. Newsmax Wires report, July 24, 2026.

The report also gave an estimated estate value of $80 million. That is a media estimate, not a court-verified inventory or a final distribution figure.

Why the death-records dispute is separate from probate

In a March 11, 2025 petition, Peters identified herself as personal representative for both estates and sought to block release of death-investigation materials, including photographs, video, body-camera footage and reports. March 11, 2025 petition.

A temporary New Mexico court order set a March 31 hearing and restricted certain records. The AP later reported that the court allowed many investigative materials to be released while barring depictions of the couple’s bodies. Santa Fe County said it released redacted records on April 15, 2025, under a court order. That litigation concerned privacy and public access to death-investigation records. It does not determine who inherits estate assets.
