In a November 2018 GeekWire report, Monica Nickelsburg described what she saw and heard after Amazon selected Northern Virginia and Queens for its planned second headquarters. Her five takeaways centered on transportation, local reactions, the economic strength of the chosen regions, political context and the uncertain prospect of new startups. They were a snapshot of the announcement period—not a current account of Amazon’s offices or plans.
What was GeekWire’s HQ2 tour?
Nickelsburg’s feature, published November 17, 2018, followed Amazon’s announcement that it had chosen the Washington, D.C., area and New York City for its planned second headquarters, commonly called HQ2. The story took readers to the expected Northern Virginia site and to Long Island City in Queens, capturing local perspectives and the reporter’s interpretation of the decision.
The headline promises “5 takeaways,” while the article’s introduction refers to “four key takeaways” before displaying five bullets. Those five listed themes are the substance of the tour.
1. Transportation links were central to both locations
Nickelsburg described the Northern Virginia site, called National Landing, as spanning parts of Crystal City, Pentagon City and Alexandria. She highlighted Metro access and proximity to Reagan National Airport. In Queens, she pointed to Long Island City’s subway connections to other boroughs and to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Her own 2018 trip from Washington’s Union Station to New York’s Penn Station took about three hours by train, followed by roughly half an hour by subway to Long Island City. That is her account of one trip, not a current route or schedule estimate.
2. The reporter encountered different local reactions
Northern Virginia
Nickelsburg found people she spoke with generally optimistic about the expected economic benefits, while also concerned that an influx of employees could worsen traffic.

Queens
She encountered more resistance in Queens, including concern about the billions of dollars in incentives associated with the deal. New York State senator Michael Gianaris, who represented the neighborhood, said at a rally: “By the way, Amazon was coming here without all this money anyway.”
These were impressions from the people Nickelsburg encountered, not representative polling or a measurement of public opinion across either region.

3. Nickelsburg argued that the contest favored Amazon’s needs
Her interpretation was that Amazon selected two large, established economic markets that could serve the company well, rather than smaller finalist cities that might have been transformed more substantially by a major employer. That is the reporter’s analysis of the choice; the feature did not establish Amazon’s private decision-making rationale.
The article reported an expectation of 25,000 employees for the Washington-area location and said Seattle had more than 45,000 Amazon employees at the time. Those are figures stated in the 2018 feature, not independently verified current workforce totals.

4. The locations had political symbolism in 2018
The story noted that both selected regions were connected to then-President Donald Trump’s personal history, at a time when he frequently criticized Amazon and CEO Jeff Bezos. This was a contextual observation about the 2018 announcement. It does not demonstrate that political symbolism shaped Amazon’s decision.

Nickelsburg cited Axios journalist Dan Primack and GeekWire’s John Cook as skeptical that Amazon’s arrival would quickly generate entrepreneurial activity in either location. Seattle venture capitalist Greg Gottesman offered a more patient view: he argued that Amazon could train future founders by giving employees broad product and technical responsibilities and ownership of business results.

“We are finding that Amazon is an incredibly powerful training ground for founders and entrepreneurs. A lot of people at Amazon control their own P&Ls and have broad product and technical responsibilities, all of which are important skills for company founders,” Gottesman said. “The stock has moved up and to the right for so long that it makes it hard to leave. But many people came to Amazon precisely because they are entrepreneurs and wanted to learn at the best entrepreneurial large company in the world. Eventually, they won’t be satisfied until they try it on their own.”
His argument described a possible pathway from experience at a large company to entrepreneurship, not evidence that the two locations had already become startup incubators.
What the tour can—and cannot—tell readers
The feature is useful as a record of the announcement-era debate: the selected sites’ transport links, the reactions Nickelsburg encountered, concerns over traffic and public incentives, and uncertainty about whether Amazon would foster new companies. Its observations and forecasts belong to 2018. GeekWire’s special-coverage index is an archive of later reporting, not a complete source for the present status of every part of the original plan. The tour alone cannot establish what ultimately happened to all elements of that plan.
