The results describe what surveyed developers and industry professionals reported—not a count of all jobs lost or a measure of every developer’s views.
What GDC’s 2025 survey measured
GDC said more than 3,000 game developers and industry professionals took part in its 2025 survey, which had a stated margin of error of ±2%. GDC worked with Omdia and Game Developer to analyze the responses. The published summary does not provide enough detail on sampling and weighting to establish that the results represent the entire game-development workforce.
That distinction matters: the percentages below are respondent reports tied to specific questions and time periods. They should not be read as an official count of industry layoffs or as a universal measure of developer opinion.
How many respondents reported a layoff?
Eleven percent of respondents said they had been laid off in the prior year. The reported share varied by role: it was 19% among Narrative respondents and 6% among Business and Finance respondents. Four percent said they had been laid off because their studio closed.

Layoffs affected more respondents than those who personally lost a job. GDC said 41% felt the impact of layoffs: 29% reported that direct colleagues were let go, and 18% saw developers on other teams let go. These categories describe reported experiences and do not establish how many jobs were eliminated across the industry.
For layoffs respondents observed, the reasons they cited included restructuring (22%), declining revenue (18%), and market or industry shifts (15%). Nineteen percent said no reason was given. These reported explanations do not account for every layoff.

What did game developers think about generative AI?
The 2025 responses show adoption and skepticism at the same time. Fifty-two percent said their company had implemented generative AI, and 36% said they personally used these tools. Separately, 30% believed generative AI was having a negative impact on the games industry. That is a significant minority, not a majority, and it measures perceived industry impact—not whether a respondent used AI at work.
GDC-listed concerns included intellectual property theft, energy use, lower quality of AI-generated content, potential bias, and regulatory issues. Personal use also varied by role: Business and Finance respondents reported the highest use at 51%, followed by Production and Team Leadership at 41%, and Community, Marketing and PR at 39%.

How the 2025 findings compare with GDC’s 2026 survey
GDC’s 2026 survey summary says 52% of respondents viewed generative AI as negatively affecting the industry, compared with 30% in 2025 and 18% in the preceding survey year. This is an increase in reported negative sentiment across survey years; the summaries do not establish what caused it.
The layoff figures need more care. In 2026, 28% said they had been laid off in the prior two years, while the 2025 figure was 11% for the prior year. Those percentages use different lookback periods and cannot be treated as a like-for-like annual comparison. The 2026 summary also says 33% of US respondents reported a layoff in the prior two years, and half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the prior 12 months.

The 2026 survey covered more than 2,300 game-industry professionals, with an expanded respondent group that included different roles and a smaller group of students. Its population and scope differ from the 2025 survey, so the results should not be collapsed into a single workforce trend line.

- Platforms: 80% said they were working on PC games, up from 66% in the prior survey. GDC said the reason for the increase was unclear; interest in Steam Deck was offered only as a possible partial explanation. Browser-game development was reported by 16%, compared with 10% the prior year and 11% the year before.
- Live service: 16% of the full survey base said they were working on live-service games, including 33% of surveyed AAA developers. Another 13% expressed interest in developing one, while 41% said they were not interested. GDC’s summary described both perceived advantages—such as financial potential and community-building—and concerns including player interest, creative stagnation, predatory practices, microtransactions, burnout, and market oversaturation.
- Funding: 56% said they had put their own money into creating their game, while 28% cited project-based or publishing deals. Among respondents who reported self-funding, 89% called it at least somewhat successful. These are survey responses, not a recommendation or forecast for an individual developer’s finances.
