The most useful firsthand account is ChocolateLife reviewer Clay Gordon’s report of tasting one bar bought at Whole Foods in December 2023. He kept his rating at zero; that is one reviewer’s judgment, not a controlled test or a consensus.

Clay Gordon’s ChocolateLife review was updated February 7, 2024. Gordon says he bought and tasted a Gatsby bar while on a business trip to Los Angeles in December 2023. He also explains that his earlier assessment had been formed before he tasted a bar and was based on ingredients and marketing language. He wrote that the tasting did not change his rating: “still a 0 (zer0).” That rating is his personal verdict, not a measured product score.
The review also reproduces an enthusiastic Reddit comment calling Gatsby the only brand that “nails dark chocolates [sic] flavor.” That is an unnamed consumer’s opinion. The sharply different reactions illustrate why isolated comments cannot establish what most buyers will think.
How did Gatsby taste?
Gordon’s reported tasting is the clearest firsthand evidence available here, and his assessment was strongly negative. It does not establish that every bar or flavor tastes the same: the account concerns one bar, and the evidence does not specify a controlled tasting, a comparison set, or a representative sample of products.

Older consumer comments mention individual impressions of different varieties, but they are anecdotal and do not provide a consistent basis for ranking flavors. Gordon described the packaging as using the phrase “dark chocolate style.” He said he found no ingredients-label image on Gatsby’s website at the time, and instead relied on a retailer packaging photograph he inferred showed a 70% dark chocolate-style almond bar. His account lists the ingredients in this order: allulose, cocoa powder, EPG (modified plant-based oil), almonds, palm kernel oil, sugar, soluble corn fiber, natural flavor, medium-chain triglycerides, and sunflower lecithin.

This is a historical secondary account of one inferred product’s package, not confirmation of a current formula, every flavor’s ingredients, or today’s label. Anyone managing an allergy, dietary restriction, or ingredient sensitivity should check the exact package being considered rather than rely on this list.
Does it legally qualify as chocolate?
Gordon interpreted the listed ingredients and “style” wording as suggesting the product may not meet US legal standards for chocolate. That is his interpretation, not a legal determination established by a regulator or a review of current law and the exact current label. The available evidence does not support presenting the legal status as settled fact.

Are Gatsby bars lower in calories, and are they worth the price?
The available material does not establish a current nutrition panel, comparable serving sizes, package sizes, or prices. It therefore cannot verify how many calories a current Gatsby bar contains or how it compares with a conventional chocolate bar. A reduced-calorie positioning alone is not enough to determine whether it is a better value: compare current labels on the same serving basis, and compare prices for equivalent amounts.
For a personal-finance decision, consider the trade-off that matters to you: taste, ingredients, portion size, and price. There is no reliable basis here to calculate calorie savings or price per serving for a current product.

Which varieties were mentioned, and where can you buy them?
An approximately 2022 Reddit thread included a response from a Gatsby Chocolate account naming Almond Dark, Sea Salt Extra Dark, Cookies & Cream, and PB Cups as varieties then available at retail, and directing readers to a store locator. Gordon’s account says he bought a bar at Whole Foods in December 2023. These historical references do not establish which products are in the current catalog, whether a particular shop has stock, or current online availability.
Check the brand’s current store locator or contact a retailer before making a trip. Confirm the exact variety and package on the shelf; old flavor names and retail mentions are not a reliable current stock check.
