Gather AI announced a $40 million Series B on February 9, 2026, led by Smith Point Capital Management, the firm founded by former Salesforce co-CEO Keith Block. The company plans to use the capital to expand beyond inventory monitoring toward broader logistics visibility. Despite the “warehouse drones” shorthand, Gather is better understood as a software platform that uses commercial drones and cameras to collect warehouse data, interpret it, and route exceptions into operating workflows.

What Gather AI’s $40 million round means

The financing brings Gather AI’s reported total funding to $74 million, according to TechCrunch’s February 9, 2026 report. The company’s announcement identifies Smith Point Capital Management as the lead investor. Smith Point was founded by Keith Block after his Salesforce leadership career.

TechCrunch reported that investors associated with Gather include Bain Capital Ventures, XRC Ventures, Tribeca Venture Partners, Dundee Venture Capital, Expa, Bling Capital, and Hillman Investments. Investor rosters can differ by round and source, so that list should not be read as a definitive accounting of who participated in this Series B.

The round is a signal of investor backing, not independent proof of customer return on investment, deployment scale, retention, or profitability. The central business question is whether Gather can make warehouse conditions measurable often enough—and reliably enough—to improve decisions that otherwise depend on intermittent counts and imperfect records.

What the platform does in a warehouse

Gather combines commercially available drones and cameras with computer vision, autonomy, and workflow software. Its system can inspect labels, barcodes, pallet and case counts, lot codes, expiration dates, damage, occupancy, and misplaced stock, then make observations available to warehouse teams and connected systems. Bain Capital Ventures describes the hardware approach as using off-the-shelf commercial equipment rather than a fully custom drone stack: its overview of Gather’s warehouse inventory-monitoring technology.

A typical inventory workflow illustrates the distinction between sensing and action: a drone or forklift-mounted camera gathers images of a rack location; vision software reads the visible information and compares it with expected inventory data; the system flags a mismatch or uncertain reading; staff investigate or resolve the exception through their normal workflow. The camera or drone collects evidence—it does not, by itself, correct a bad record or move a pallet.

Gather’s platform page lists MHE Vision, Drone Vision, 3D Case Count, Battery Swapper, and Smart Multi-Deep Logic. These are company-presented capabilities, not evidence that each is a separately purchasable product or that its performance has been independently validated. The company describes its broader direction as physical visibility across logistics operations, rather than inventory counting alone. Gather’s platform overview and its funding announcement outline that positioning.

Why Gather calls the system “curious”

“Curious” describes a confidence-driven inspection loop, not human-like reasoning. When a label or location is ambiguous, the system can seek more information—for example, by obtaining another angle or observation—instead of treating the first image as conclusive. It then records a result or surfaces an exception for follow-up.

Gather CEO and co-founder Sankalp Arora told TechCrunch that the system combines classical Bayesian methods with neural networks. That is a company-described computer-vision approach, not an independent technical audit. It is also not an LLM chatbot; that distinction does not make the vision system error-free. Labels can still be obscured, damaged, reflective, or misread.

Why warehouse visibility is a hard problem

Inventory records can diverge from what is physically on a rack. A pallet may be put in the wrong slot, a label may face away from the aisle, or a system may show an item as unavailable even though it is present. Manual cycle counts can require workers to walk aisles or use lifts to reach high storage, and periodic counts leave intervals when errors go undiscovered. Bain Capital Ventures discusses these visibility and counting challenges in its background on Gather.

Those gaps can affect fulfillment, labor, shrink, revenue, and working capital. More frequent automated observation may narrow the gap between a physical change and its appearance in a record, but a scan is still a snapshot: inventory can move after an inspection and before a system update. Better sensing cannot independently fix inaccurate master data, duplicate product records, or broken warehouse-management rules.

Why use drones, forklift cameras, or both?

Drones can reach high rack locations without requiring a worker to ride a lift for every inspection, and repeated automated scans may be more frequent than manual counts. Forklift-mounted cameras can capture information while material-handling equipment is already moving through aisles. Company and investor materials also describe use in cold-storage and freezer environments, though that does not establish that every facility or freezer configuration is supported.

Using commercial hardware may reduce the need for custom robotics infrastructure, but it does not make deployment infrastructure-free. A buyer still needs to assess safe operating procedures around people and moving equipment, hardware maintenance and replacement, charging or battery swapping, connectivity, integration, and how uncertain readings are handled. The available sources do not establish a general safety certification or regulatory status for every deployment.

The practical role is to automate data collection and exception detection, not eliminate warehouse labor. People still resolve discrepancies, decide what a mismatch means, and carry out physical work.

From Carnegie Mellon robotics research to logistics software

Gather was founded in 2017 by Carnegie Mellon University PhD students, including CEO Sankalp Arora, whose earlier research involved autonomous helicopters, obstacle avoidance, and computer vision. TechCrunch’s report on the funding and product connects that background to the company’s approach to autonomous inspection. The founders’ robotics experience helps explain the product’s origins; it is not, on its own, evidence of commercial performance.

What Gather says it will do with the funding

Gather says the financing will support platform development, global expansion, and a move from inventory intelligence toward dock-to-dock logistics operations. The company also says it is building an ecosystem with warehouse-management-system providers, naming Manhattan Associates and Blue Yonder in its announcement. That is a company-reported partnership and expansion plan, not independent confirmation of the breadth or status of integrations.

“Dock-to-dock” is a wider ambition than inspecting stored inventory. Its commercial significance will depend on how much of receiving, storage, movement, and outbound activity the platform can observe and connect to useful workflows. The funding announcement establishes the direction; it does not show that all of those capabilities are already deployed across customers.

What the available traction claims show—and what they do not

TechCrunch named Kwik Trip, Axon, GEODIS, and NFI Industries as customers at the time of its February 2026 report. Gather’s press archive also features customer stories involving NFI, Langham Logistics, GEODIS, and Barrett Distribution. TechCrunch reported about 60 employees at the time of the financing announcement; that is a dated figure, not a current headcount.

Gather’s funding-related materials cite a 99.9% inventory-accuracy result, while customer stories describe other outcomes. The following figures are company- or customer-reported and are not independently audited in the sources cited here:

How Gather compares with other ways to count inventory

Approach Potential advantage Trade-off to assess
Manual barcode cycle counts Familiar, flexible, and low in technology requirements. Labor-intensive and periodic; counts may be delayed or affected by human error.
Forklift- or MHE-mounted cameras Collect observations while equipment is already traveling through aisles. Coverage depends on equipment routes and camera views; may be less suited to dedicated, high-rack inspection.
Fixed-camera monitoring Can provide repeated observation in defined zones. Requires camera placement, power, networking, and infrastructure; less flexible if the layout changes.
Autonomous mobile robots Can carry sensors and may support material movement as well as inspection. May entail a larger operational and capital commitment than a camera-and-drone inventory system.
Warehouse drones Can inspect elevated rack locations and repeat scans without a worker using a lift for every count. Requires site-specific safety planning, hardware operations, and a clear process for failed or uncertain readings.

These are categories, not a claim that one approach fits every facility. Specific competitor capabilities, prices, deployment scale, and geographic availability are not established by the sources cited here.

What a warehouse buyer should verify before a demo or contract

Gather does not publish standard pricing in the cited buying materials. Its request-a-demo page directs prospective customers to a 30-minute consultation. Hardware, implementation, integration, support, and ongoing operations may all affect total cost; buyers should not assume these are included in a standard package.

  • Facility fit: Ask how rack height, aisle geometry, lighting, reflective wrap, damaged labels, obstructions, cold temperatures, and forklift traffic affect coverage and accuracy.
  • Safety and supervision: Clarify where drones can operate, what human oversight is required, how people and equipment share the space, and what site-specific procedures, insurance, and compliance reviews are needed.
  • Data and integration: Confirm which WMS and inventory systems are supported, whether results can be written back to the system of record, and how APIs, identity, security, and data retention are handled.
  • Measurement: Define accuracy precisely—per image, location, pallet, SKU, or facility—and request a baseline, test period, treatment of unreadable labels, and independently reviewable results.
  • Exception workflow: Ask what happens when a label cannot be read, a pallet appears misplaced, or a scan conflicts with a record; identify who reviews the alert and how it is closed.
  • Operating continuity: Establish scan frequency, update latency, behavior during network outages, local data caching, charging or battery-swap responsibilities, maintenance, and recovery after hardware failure.
  • Economics: Compare total deployment and operating costs with current labor, lift access, counting frequency, error rates, shrink, and the value of preventing stockouts. Model the payback across the facilities where the system would actually be used.
  • Scope: Separate capabilities available for deployment now from the broader dock-to-dock roadmap, and ask for evidence from sites with similar operations.

The strongest fit is likely to be a warehouse network where high racks, frequent discrepancies, costly cycle counts, or expensive stockouts make repeated visibility valuable. A small, low-rack facility with few errors, or one unable to support indoor drone operations, may be better served by manual scanning or another camera approach.
