Diesel prices have climbed faster and higher than gasoline in the 2026 U.S. market episode because a globally tight supply of distillate fuels is colliding with elevated crude prices, high refining margins and low U.S. inventories. Diesel also tends to cost more than regular gasoline even in ordinary markets: demand for distillates is strong, producing and distributing ultra-low-sulfur diesel adds costs, and the federal diesel tax is higher. The result reaches beyond drivers and truckers: diesel is a major freight fuel, so persistently high prices can raise the cost of moving goods.
Why is diesel more expensive than gas?
Diesel and gasoline are distinct refined products. They draw on refinery capacity differently, and their prices respond to different demand patterns and supply conditions. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says on-highway diesel has been more expensive than regular gasoline almost continuously since September 2004.
- Strong distillate demand: Diesel is part of the distillate-fuel category, which also includes heating oil. EIA points to relatively high demand for diesel and other distillates in Europe, China, India and the United States. Competition across those markets can affect U.S. prices.
- Production and distribution costs: The U.S. transition to ultra-low-sulfur diesel affected the costs of producing and distributing the fuel.
- Higher federal tax: The federal on-highway diesel excise tax is 24.40 cents per gallon, 6 cents more than the federal gasoline excise tax, according to EIA. State and local fuel taxes vary, so the tax difference at the pump is not identical everywhere.
Taxes are only one component. EIA estimates crude oil accounted for about 51% of the average U.S. retail on-highway diesel price from 2004 through 2025. The rest includes refinery costs and margins, distribution, marketing, station costs and taxes. Those shares change over time and vary by location. EIA explains the factors affecting diesel prices and the components of gasoline prices.
Why are diesel prices going up so much?
The 2026 surge reflects more than the usual reasons diesel can cost more. The EIA’s September 2026 analysis describes a globally tight market for distillate fuels, alongside high crude prices and a high diesel crack spread—the difference between crude oil costs and the value of refined diesel, used as a proxy for refinery margins.

Global supply pressure raises U.S. prices
Reduced refining activity in Russia, China and the Middle East tightened global distillate supplies, EIA reported. That can lift international diesel prices, increase the cost of U.S. imports and support demand for U.S. exports. The Associated Press (AP), in a September 2026 report, separately connected supply-chain disruption to the late-February war with Iran and tanker traffic around the Strait of Hormuz. That is the AP’s dated account; it does not establish that the route was continuously or totally closed.
High U.S. output has not meant abundant supply at home
U.S. diesel production averaged 5.1 million barrels per day from January through August 2026, its highest level since 2019, according to EIA. But production is only one part of the supply picture. In the week ending September 11, 2026, U.S. refinery utilization was 97%, net exports had remained near or above their previous five-year high since February, and distillate inventories were 13% below their five-year seasonal average. Strong exports and low stocks can leave the domestic market tight even when refineries are producing heavily.

Those low inventories also helped lift refining margins. EIA’s September 2026 analysis links high crude prices and a high diesel crack spread to the retail increase. Because crude, refining margins, supply and demand all move, diesel can rise faster than crude oil or gasoline alone would suggest.
Keep the price comparison dated
EIA’s weekly average U.S. retail diesel price was $6.29 per gallon on September 14, 2026. EIA said this was the highest nominal level in its series since 1994 and the highest inflation-adjusted level since 2022. It is a dated observation, not an October 4 live quote. AP reported an approximately 56% increase from about $3.76 per gallon before the late-February Iran war to its early-September comparison; that is an AP-reported AAA comparison, not an EIA series calculation. For a current price, compare the latest weekly observations from EIA or AAA rather than treating either September figure as current.

Why does diesel affect shipping and trucking costs?
Diesel powers much of freight movement by truck and rail, and it is also used in agriculture. When the fuel becomes more expensive, carriers and other businesses face higher operating costs. EIA puts the link plainly: “High diesel prices can contribute to higher on-road and rail freight costs for all goods.”
Trucking technology company SemiCab’s CEO and founder Ajesh Kapoor told AP: “Diesel price has a very, very direct impact on everything that moves on pretty much any mode.” The effect is not confined to long-haul trucks: AP also notes diesel’s role in farm equipment, fishing boats, and the trains and trucks that move food to grocery stores.

Will higher diesel prices make groceries more expensive?
They can add pressure to grocery and delivery costs, but a pump-price increase does not translate into a fixed, immediate increase on every item. The timing and amount depend on freight contracts, fuel surcharges, retailer margins, demand and other costs specific to a product. Some businesses may initially absorb part of a fuel increase, while others pass more of it along when contracts reset or surcharges change.
David Ortega, a professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University, told AP: “Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins,” and “But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store.” AP also notes that non-fuel factors can offset transportation pressure for some goods. There is no established economy-wide figure here that would support assigning diesel a precise share of current inflation.

What to watch when comparing diesel and gas prices
To understand why one fuel is rising faster, compare like with like: the same geography, date, tax basis and price level. A retail pump price is not directly comparable to a wholesale price or futures quote, and nominal prices should not be confused with inflation-adjusted records.
- Crude oil: A major input for both fuels, though its share of the final price changes.
- Refining margins: Diesel’s crack spread can widen independently of crude prices and push retail diesel up.
- Inventories and supply: Low stocks, reduced overseas refining, imports and exports affect how much fuel is available to meet demand.
- Distribution and retail costs: Transport access, supply routes, marketing and station costs can make prices differ by region.
- Taxes: Federal, state and local taxes affect the amount paid at the pump, and state and local rates vary.
For the longer-term price components, see EIA’s diesel price analysis. For the dated market conditions and price observations described above, see EIA’s September 2026 analysis of diesel prices and AP’s September 2026 report on diesel and transportation costs.
