On December 1, 2025, Amazon advertised the Garmin Forerunner 970 for $649.99, down $100 from its $749.99 U.S. launch/list price. Wareable described that price as the model’s lowest ever at the time. It was a historical Cyber Monday deal, not proof of a live August 2026 offer; Amazon pricing, sellers and inventory can change.
The most accurate description is therefore “the lowest price reported at the time.” No complete, all-retailer price database establishes that $649.99 was lower than every coupon, open-box unit, bundle or regional promotion.

Wareable’s December 1 report supplied the deal details. A later Tom’s Guide deal roundup also listed the watch at $649.99 during June 2026 coverage, showing that the figure remained a notable low price, not proving an all-time record.

What the Forerunner 970 delivers
Garmin positions the 970 as its premium Forerunner for running and triathlon. Its headline hardware and functions include:
- 47mm case with an AMOLED display
- Built-in maps and multi-band GPS
- Sapphire lens and titanium bezel
- Built-in LED flashlight
- ECG App where country approval and regional availability permit it
- Garmin Pay, music storage, and smartphone-connected calls and texts
- Up to 15 days in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS mode, according to Garmin’s stated specifications
Garmin’s launch information is available in its Forerunner 570 and 970 announcement. “Up to” figures depend on settings, sensors, GPS mode and usage; they are not guaranteed everyday runtimes.
The extra cost behind the newest running metrics
The watch works without a chest strap, but its most specialized form-analysis features can require one. Garmin’s manual identifies Step Speed Loss as an HRM 600-only metric. Garmin also says Running Economy needs a compatible accessory that measures step-speed loss, such as the HRM 600, plus several qualifying outdoor or track runs.

The strap is not necessary for basic pace, distance, GPS or wrist-heart-rate use.

The discount was most compelling for serious runners and triathletes who would use built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, premium materials and advanced training data. It also suited buyers who specifically valued a flashlight, sapphire lens or ECG support where available, and who accepted the possibility of buying an HRM 600.

Buyers replacing an older or damaged watch
A $100 reduction improved the value proposition for someone already committed to Garmin and ready for a premium replacement. The decision still depends on whether the 970-specific features justify paying more than an older 965 or a lower-tier 570.
When to skip the 970
- Casual runners: Pace, distance, GPS, heart rate and notifications do not require this price level.
- Strap-averse buyers: Do not pay for the watch expecting every advanced running metric without compatible accessory support.
- Battery-first users: Garmin lists longer smartwatch endurance for the Forerunner 965.
- 965 owners: An upgrade is difficult to justify if mapping and existing training features already meet your needs.
- Budget shoppers: Even at $649.99, the 970 remained a premium purchase rather than a low-cost Garmin.
970 versus the Forerunner 570
The 570 is the more economical choice when built-in maps, sapphire glass, ECG and a flashlight are not priorities. Garmin’s comparison lists the 570 with AMOLED, multi-band GPS, training readiness, Garmin Pay and music, plus up to 11 days of smartwatch battery life. It does not list the 970’s built-in mapping and flashlight.

970 versus the Forerunner 965
The 965 remains a serious alternative. Garmin lists built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music and Garmin Pay, with up to 23 days of smartwatch-mode battery life. The 970 adds newer features including a flashlight, ECG support and updated training capabilities, but its quoted smartwatch maximum is up to 15 days.

The trade-off is straightforward: choose the 970 for its newer hardware and specific extras; choose the 965 when longer quoted battery life and a potentially lower purchase price matter more. Garmin’s 970-versus-965 comparison shows the listed differences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.970 versus the fēnix 8
The fēnix 8 is positioned as a rugged multisport and adventure watch. Garmin lists mapping, ECG, flashlight and multi-band GPS, with up to 16 days of smartwatch life for the 47mm AMOLED model. The 970 is the running-first option.
Wareable judged the 970 lighter and slimmer and preferable for pure runners in its testing. That is an editorial comparison, not a universal rule. Pick the fēnix 8 if rugged outdoor construction and broader adventure positioning outweigh a running-focused design. See Garmin’s comparison.

A practical buyer checklist
- Confirm whether the price is live, and check the Amazon seller, color, shipping and tax.
- Decide whether you actually need maps, sapphire, ECG, a flashlight or premium titanium construction.
- Determine whether Running Economy or Step Speed Loss is important enough to justify an HRM 600.
- Compare the 570 if you want advanced training at lower cost.
- Compare the 965 if longer battery life and value matter more than the 970’s new features.
- Compare the fēnix 8 if rugged adventure use is a priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the Garmin Forerunner 970 deal available on August 18, 2026?
The documented promotion occurred on December 1, 2025. A current August 2026 price requires checking the live retailer listing.
Does every Forerunner 970 owner need an HRM 600?
No. The watch’s normal GPS, pace, distance and wrist-heart-rate functions work without it. The strap matters for specific metrics, including Step Speed Loss and the accessory-supported Running Economy estimate.
Is $649.99 proven to be the lowest price ever?
It was the lowest price reported by Wareable on December 1, 2025. The available evidence does not establish an absolute all-retailer record across coupons, bundles, open-box listings and regions.
The Bottom Line
$649.99 was a meaningful $100 Cyber Monday discount for a premium running watch, but not an automatic bargain. It made the most sense for buyers who wanted the Forerunner 970’s mapping, sapphire construction, flashlight, ECG availability and newest training features—and who understood that the most advanced running-form data could add the cost of an HRM 600.
