Palantir employees did not stage a company-wide revolt against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). But after federal agents fatally shot Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti in January 2026, multiple workers used internal Slack channels to challenge Palantir’s ICE relationship, question possible misuse of its systems and express embarrassment about the work. Futurism summarized that dispute with the headline “Even Palantir Staff Are Now Disgusted With ICE”; WIRED’s reporting supports the narrower description of a visible, consequential internal dissent.
The backlash changed Palantir’s internal explanations and control discussions—not the underlying partnership. Reporting indicates that ImmigrationOS work continued and was extended into an official product through spring 2027.
What happened inside Palantir?
According to WIRED’s review of internal Slack messages, employees began questioning the company’s ICE and Department of Homeland Security work after Pretti’s death in Minneapolis. Workers asked what Palantir’s systems were being used to do, whether ICE could use them beyond contractual limits and whether the reputational and ethical risks justified continuing the contracts.
Some posts attracted many “+1” reactions, showing visible support in the channels where they appeared. That is not the same as a representative employee poll: the reporting does not disclose the number of participants, the size of the audience, or the views of the wider workforce.

What employees reportedly said
- Some expressed moral opposition to ICE’s conduct. One post quoted by WIRED said, “In my opinion ICE are the bad guys.”
- Others said they were embarrassed by Palantir’s association with the agency or worried that a future administration could expose the company to greater reputational damage.
- Workers requested a precise explanation of Palantir’s role and asked whether the company could pressure or restrain ICE.
- They questioned whether Palantir could monitor every downstream use of a general-purpose data platform, including possible connections to databases used to identify protesters or alleged domestic terrorists.
Palantir’s privacy and civil-liberties leaders responded with an internal explanation of its immigration contracts. Employees continued asking questions afterward, and CEO Alex Karp later joined an internal video discussion, as reported by WIRED. The company had faced employee criticism of ICE work before, including during the first Trump administration; the 2026 dispute made that conflict more visible amid expanded enforcement activity.
Why the Minneapolis shooting mattered
Pretti’s death was the immediate catalyst, not the beginning of Palantir’s ICE relationship. The incident forced employees to connect a highly publicized enforcement action with contracts that had often been compartmentalized inside the company. Some workers said they had learned important details about Palantir’s ICE work from news reports rather than internal briefings.
That created a dispute over transparency as well as immigration policy. Palantir can argue that sensitive government contracts require need-to-know access. Employees can reasonably respond that people designing, selling or maintaining a system need enough information to understand its social and operational consequences. Without that information, internal civil-liberties review is difficult and outside verification is even harder.

What Palantir provides to ICE
Palantir supplies several products and systems; the reporting does not establish one single application that independently makes deportation decisions. Their documented functions include integrating data, managing cases, finding leads, ranking information and tracking enforcement workflows.

| System | Reported role | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| ImmigrationOS | ICE’s “Immigration Lifecycle Operating System.” WIRED reported an approximately $30 million contract for near-real-time visibility into immigration cases and people leaving or self-deporting from the United States. | Its exact production scope has evolved, and the reporting does not show that it autonomously orders arrests or deportations. |
| ELITE | 404 Media identified ELITE as “Enhanced Leads Identification and Targeting Enforcement.” Reporting based on internal ICE material, procurement records and sworn testimony described geographic displays of potential targets, case files, multiple government and commercial data sources, address-confidence scores and enforcement prioritization. | It is not established as an autonomous arrest system. Human officials remain responsible for enforcement decisions. |
| Investigative Case Management and related systems | Case-management infrastructure that can centralize information for investigations, case selection and deportation tracking, according to congressional correspondence and civil-liberties reporting. | It should not automatically be treated as the same product as ImmigrationOS or ELITE. |
Sources include WIRED’s ImmigrationOS reporting, 404 Media’s ELITE investigation and a congressional letter.
Software support is not legal authority
Calling these systems “AI-powered” can obscure what they actually do. The reported capabilities are search, matching, mapping, ranking, case-file generation, workflow management and tracking. They can make enforcement more scalable, but the available reporting does not show Palantir software independently deciding who is arrested, detained or deported.

Why the data creates civil-liberties risks
Integrated enforcement systems can combine immigration records with government databases, commercial information, location or vehicle data, address histories, family or relationship information and case-management records. That reduces the practical friction involved in locating people, while making errors harder for affected individuals to discover or correct.
- False positives: An incorrect identity or address can direct agents toward the wrong person.
- Data drift: Addresses, immigration status and family relationships change, while databases may not update promptly.
- Mission creep: A system built for case management could be adapted to broader surveillance or protest monitoring.
- Opacity: A person may never learn which record or match triggered attention.
- Automation bias: Officials may over-trust a ranked lead or confidence score.
- Accountability gaps: ICE controls enforcement decisions while Palantir controls software design and access mechanisms.
These are risks and reported concerns, not proof that every listed misuse occurred. The ACLU has analyzed Palantir’s role in ICE enforcement at its technology and privacy briefing; 404 Media and WIRED have separately described the systems and data practices.
Palantir’s defense
Palantir’s internal civil-liberties explanation argued that its technology can support more targeted outcomes and reduce indiscriminate enforcement. The company emphasized ICE’s stated commitment to avoiding unlawful or unnecessary targeting, apprehension and detention of U.S. citizens. Its position is that ICE, not Palantir, is responsible for lawful operational use.

Management also acknowledged reputational risk, reports of racial profiling and U.S. citizens being detained or deported, the difficulty of policing every use of a general-purpose platform and the possibility that individual “bad apples” could misuse systems. 404 Media published the internal justification Palantir used to explain the work.
The central accountability question is whether contractual restrictions, access controls, audit logs and internal review can prevent misuse after a powerful data-integration system is deployed inside an enforcement agency. A vendor’s stated limits are not the same as independent proof that every workflow follows them.

There is no evidence in the available reporting that Palantir ended its ICE relationship. Instead, the company explained its work internally, held employee question-and-answer sessions, recorded Karp’s video discussion and pursued additional auditing and control mechanisms.

WIRED reported a company hack week focused on adding controls to software used by ICE and said ImmigrationOS work was extended into an official product through spring 2027. See the report on those controls and the extension.
That distinction matters: internal dissent appears to have changed communication and governance efforts, not the fundamental government contract.
How strong is the “disgusted staff” claim?
The fairest reading is narrower than the headline:
- Multiple employees criticized or questioned Palantir’s ICE work.
- Some used strongly condemnatory language, and their posts received visible support.
- The reporting does not establish that most employees, or the workforce as a whole, opposed the contracts.
- It does not document a strike, mass resignation, refusal to work or successful campaign to terminate the relationship.
- Palantir responded with explanations, executive engagement and proposed controls while continuing the work.
“Disgusted” is therefore best treated as Futurism’s characterization of an internal mood, not a measured description of every Palantir employee.
What this conflict reveals
The dispute is about more than one shooting or one product. It exposes a recurring problem in public-sector technology: responsibility is divided between a vendor that builds and configures systems and an agency that uses them to exercise legal power.

Palantir’s tools can improve targeting efficiency. The same integration can amplify stale records, inaccurate matches or discriminatory patterns at greater speed and scale. Compartmentalization may protect sensitive operations, but it can also prevent employees from evaluating consequences. Civil-liberties programs and audit controls may reduce risk without answering the prior question of whether a company should accept or renew the work.
The strongest evidence-supported conclusion is not that Palantir employees collectively rejected ICE. It is that a visible group challenged the company after Pretti’s death, forcing a public look at how data-integration software supports immigration enforcement—and at the limits of vendor responsibility once that software is embedded in government operations.
