The initial approach was reported as rejected by owner Vincent Tan; in July, Bale said the group had submitted a new offer. Public reporting does not establish that Tan accepted it or that ownership changed. Bale’s earlier link to Plymouth Argyle came from takeover reports, not a confirmed bid.
The reported developments are from 2025. The available sources do not establish the status of any approach or ownership change as of 8 October 2026.
What did Gareth Bale say about buying Cardiff City?
On 24 June 2025, Bale told Sky Sports, in comments reported by ITV News Wales, that he was part of a group interested in acquiring a controlling interest in Cardiff City. He explained the personal connection: “We are interested in getting Cardiff. It’s my home (town) club, it’s where I grew up and my uncle used to play for them.” He also said, “To be involved with an ownership group would be a dream come true.” ITV News Wales reported the comments on 24 June 2025.
Bale was born and raised in Cardiff but did not play for Cardiff City. His uncle, Chris Pike, played for the club in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to BBC Sport’s July 2025 explainer. The interest was framed as a consortium bid, not Bale buying the club on his own.

What happened to the Cardiff approach and reported offer?
The public account has several distinct stages. An expression of interest, a reported offer and a completed transfer of ownership are not the same thing.
| Stage | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial approach, June 2025 | ITV News Wales reported that the group made an initial enquiry earlier that month and that Tan rejected it. The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust described the communication as a notice of intention, not a formal bid; it said the club board confirmed no bid had been received. BBC’s July explainer also distinguished that proposal from a formal bid and reported Tan had dismissed it. | An initial approach was reported, but the sources do not establish that a formal bid was made or accepted. |
| New offer, July 2025 | On 11 July, Bale told Front Office Sports Today: “It’s exciting news, we have a brand new offer on the table, it’s recently just gone in.” BBC reported his comments; the offer’s terms were not disclosed, and Cardiff had not commented at that point. | Bale said a new offer had been submitted. Its value, terms and outcome were not established in that report. |
| Further approaches, August 2025 | Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said the club had received approaches but distinguished them from a bid. He said he was not pursuing an unnamed approach he considered serious and described due diligence information he expected, including identities and proof of funds. | Dalman’s comments describe the position he gave at that time, not a current 2026 transaction status. |
| Completed sale or ownership transfer | The cited reporting does not confirm that Tan accepted an offer or that Cardiff’s ownership transferred to Bale’s consortium. | No completed takeover is established by these reports. |
The July report put an earlier proposal’s reported value at £40m, but that figure is not evidence of an accepted offer and was not given as the value of Bale’s later “brand new offer.” The same BBC explainer said Cardiff had invested more than £200m in the club since Tan bought it in 2010. It also cited club accounts showing £68m in loans owed to Tan at the end of the last published accounting period in May 2024, with total loans above £100m. These are historical figures reported by BBC, not current valuations. See BBC Sport’s explainer and its 11 July 2025 report on Bale’s new offer.

Was Gareth Bale trying to buy Plymouth Argyle?
Bale was linked in earlier reports to a group said to be interested in Plymouth Argyle while owner Simon Hallett was seeking investment. BBC’s July 2025 explainer said sources at Plymouth played down the reports; at that stage, neither Bale nor the unnamed group had made a public statement. Front Office Sports later characterized the Plymouth connection as a rumour and reported that Bale denied those reports. The surfaced reporting does not establish a confirmed bid or acquisition by Bale at Plymouth. BBC Sport and Front Office Sports cover the Plymouth connection.
What is known about the bid’s status?
The reporting supports a limited conclusion: Bale publicly confirmed consortium interest in Cardiff, an initial approach was reported as rejected, and Bale later said a new offer had gone in. The reports cited here do not show that Tan accepted the later offer, disclose its final terms, or confirm a completed sale. They also do not establish what happened after the 2025 statements, so they cannot verify the position on 8 October 2026.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman questioned the quality of information he had received during the takeover reporting in August 2025. In the BBC’s reproduced report, he called it “This has been fascinating work of fiction.” He also said: “For me to me to take anybody seriously, I need to know who they are in their entirety. I need to know proof of funds, preferably by a financial institution of some credibility. I need to know who their lawyers are, and I need to know who their accountants are. Until they give me those four things, I don’t have an offer.” These were Dalman’s comments at that time; they do not establish the current status of Bale’s consortium or any later approach. The reproduced report attributes the remarks to him.

Bale was a former Wales captain. BBC Sport’s July 2025 report noted that he won 111 caps for Wales and scored 41 goals. Those career figures help explain why the reported interest attracted attention, but they do not indicate whether a takeover offer was financially viable or likely to succeed. BBC Sport reported the figures alongside Bale’s July comments.
