At an Income Tax Department awareness programme in Ganderbal on October 7, 2026, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar, Monika Dhami urged taxpayers to see tax as a contribution to nation-building rather than a burden. The programme addressed businesses, Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs) and other stakeholders, with sessions on return filing, deductions, exemptions and tax deducted at source (TDS), according to Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

What was the Income Tax Department’s message?

Speaking to reporters, Dhami said: “Our main message was that tax is a tool for nation-building and should not be viewed as a burden, but as a contribution towards nation-building.” KNO also attributed to her the statement: “The Income Tax Department, assessees and taxpayers are all partners in nation-building.”

The message was a call for voluntary compliance and use of taxpayer services offered by the department. Dhami encouraged people to seek professional guidance when needed, KNO reported.

What did the Ganderbal awareness programme cover?

KNO reported that the event took place at the Mini Secretariat in Ganderbal on October 7, 2026. It was intended for industrialists, traders, hoteliers, DDOs and other stakeholders.

Assistant Commissioner Sandhya Partap gave a presentation on return filing, deductions and exemptions, TDS-related documentation, and other issues relevant to the business and industrial community. The programme also covered the New Income Tax Act, 2025, but KNO did not describe its individual provisions.

What can taxpayers take away?

The programme highlights topics taxpayers and organisations may want to clarify: filing returns, understanding which deductions or exemptions may apply, and maintaining documentation connected with TDS. The report does not establish what any particular taxpayer must file, which deduction they qualify for, or what documents they need in their circumstances.

KNO’s report does not set out the text of the New Income Tax Act, 2025, or specify its commencement date, tax rates, eligibility rules, deadlines or procedures. It should not be treated as authoritative guidance on an individual tax obligation. For a question about your own return or an organisation’s TDS responsibilities, check current guidance from the Income Tax Department or consult a qualified tax professional.

What did the report say about DDO concerns and department systems?

KNO reported Dhami’s remarks about departmental data, processing and connectivity, and said the department was ready to address DDO concerns about compliance and TDS filing. These are statements reported from the event, not an independent assessment of the department’s systems or a guarantee about how a particular filing will be handled.
