The promotion is over: qualifying customers could trade one item for $5 in store credit, subject to a 20-by-20-by-20-inch size limit and employee approval.
What were the Trade Anything Day rules?
GameStop’s promotion was not literally an offer to accept any object. In its pre-event coverage, GameSpot reported that the event was limited to one item per customer, with $5 in store credit for an accepted trade. The item had to fit inside a 20-by-20-by-20-inch box, and employees could refuse it.
- Credit: $5 in store credit for an accepted item.
- Limit: One item per customer.
- Size: The item had to fit within 20 by 20 by 20 inches.
- Approval: GameStop employees retained discretion to reject an item.
A GameStop promotional email dated December 4, 2025, reproduced by Milled, also listed hazardous waste or materials, chemicals, liquids, lithium-ion batteries and items containing them, weapons and ammunition, alcohol, tobacco, drugs or pharmaceuticals, and certain computers and peripherals among exclusions. GameSpot’s pre-event report additionally listed explicit items and objects resembling body parts.
Why was taxidermy allowed?
The exclusions included dead and live animals, but taxidermy was an express exception—not an inference from the event’s name. GameStop’s preserved email said: “Dead or alive animals” were excluded, with the parenthetical “Taxidermy items are valid for trade.” That exception did not override the size limit or employee discretion.

When did the promotion happen, and what was traded?
Trade Anything Day took place on December 6, 2025, so the $5 offer is no longer available. In a report published December 8, GameSpot reported that GameStop said the event generated more than 80,000 trades across the US that day. The total is the company’s figure as reported by GameSpot, not an independently audited count.
GameSpot’s account of the results included a taxidermied bobcat and goose, a speed-limit sign, a bowling ball, and a Wii Netflix disc. The unusual examples illustrate the promotion’s breadth, but they do not mean every item was guaranteed acceptance.
