GameStop scheduled online preorders for 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, April 24, 2025; in-store preorders were to begin when each store opened. Online: reported technical trouble
GameSpot reported technical issues when GameStop’s online ordering opened. The account described problems during a high-demand launch, but the reporting did not quantify how many customers were affected or establish a rate of failed orders. A site error, a sold-out preorder allocation, and difficulty completing a transaction are distinct outcomes; the available reporting does not provide figures to measure each one.
In stores: allegations about required add-ons
Customer and Twitch streamer Elea Tsentzelis said staff at GameStop’s Astoria, New York, location required add-ons to process her preorder. GameSpot reported that video of the transaction showed an employee asking for a bundle with a minimum item quantity. GameStop’s support account said it was “actively investigating” and asked customers who had been turned away at that location to contact the company. GameSpot published the account on April 29, 2025.

Did GameStop require everyone to buy a bundle?
No company-wide rule is established by the available reporting. GameSpot noted that some customers said they could preorder a console by itself at other locations; other customers described similar upselling or pressure to join a membership. These are individual customer accounts, not a measured survey of stores or a confirmed nationwide policy. The Astoria allegation should therefore be treated as location-specific, while broader claims remain customer reports.
