GameStop’s “more than 400” U.S. store-closure figure came from an unofficial tracker snapshot reported on January 10, 2026—not a company announcement. The company later disclosed in its fiscal 2025 annual report that it closed 727 U.S. stores during the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026.
What the original “more than 400” report counted
On January 10, 2026, Engadget reported that an unofficial closure tracker listed 410 U.S. GameStop locations as confirmed closing or already closed. The tracker also listed 11 additional locations as reportedly on the way. Those were separate status categories: the 11 pending locations should not be added to the 410 and described as confirmed closures. Engadget’s report presented a dated tracker snapshot, not a company-confirmed total.
What GameStop later reported officially
In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, GameStop said it closed 727 U.S. stores during the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026. Its store-count table shows the U.S. footprint falling from 2,325 stores on February 1, 2025, to 1,598 on January 31, 2026. The 727 figure is a fiscal-year total, not a calendar-year 2025 count. GameStop’s SEC-filed annual report is the company’s retrospective figure; it is not a revised count of the tracker’s January snapshot.
The company reported 998 store disposals across its global footprint in fiscal 2025: 727 in the United States, 193 in Canada, 75 in Australia, and 3 in Europe. The global total should not be mistaken for U.S. closures.

Why GameStop said it reviewed stores for closure
GameStop’s annual report says its annual store-portfolio review considers current market conditions, individual store performance, and other relevant factors. That explains the factors the company said informed its review; it does not establish that any one factor caused a particular location to close.
What the company said about future closures
In the same annual report, GameStop said it did not anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026, describing its domestic store footprint as a core component of its logistics infrastructure strategy. This was management’s outlook at the time of the filing, not a guarantee that no stores would close.

The company’s fiscal 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q, for the period ended August 1, 2026, discusses continued store-fleet optimization and the completed sale of its French subsidiary. The cited filing material does not provide a newer U.S. closure total, so it does not replace the fiscal 2025 figure with a current count.

The tracker report can help explain what was being reported in January, but it is not a reliable way to determine whether a specific nearby store remains open now. The 727 figure is a later, official total for closures across the full U.S. fiscal year; it does not identify the status of every location today. For a particular store, check GameStop’s current store locator or contact the location before making a trip.
