GameStop jokingly called the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii U and Xbox 360 “retro” in March 2026 and announced extra trade credit for qualifying items. The reported 10% bonus has expired. GameStop still lists console and retro-game trades, but whether it will accept a particular system—and what it will offer—depends on the item and participating store.
What GameStop meant by “retro”
On March 16, 2026, GameStop described the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U as “for all practical purposes, now officially retro consoles,” according to Time Extension’s report. The announcement joked about component cables, the systems’ age and the absence of Fortnite, and assured owners that the consoles were “still very cool.” This was GameStop’s promotional framing, not an industry-wide or technical standard for classifying consoles.
What was the trade-in perk?
GameStop’s announcement included a reported 10% extra trade credit on qualifying consoles, games or accessories. Time Extension also reported that stores would accept defective retro consoles if they powered on. Those details describe the limited-time promotion, not a standing promise about current trades.
Reports disagreed about when the offer ended: Time Extension reported March 21, 2026, while Nintendo Everything’s coverage said March 31. The exact end date is unresolved, but either date is in the past, so the bonus is no longer available.

Can you trade a PS3, Wii U or Xbox 360 at GameStop now?
GameStop’s current trade page lists consoles and retro gaming among its trade categories. That does not guarantee acceptance of every PS3, Wii U or Xbox 360 model. GameStop says its trade program is limited to select products at select stores in the United States and Guam; it determines condition and trade value at its discretion. For the highest value, products must be in good condition and include necessary components.
Check the specific item and local store before making a trip. The current general terms do not establish model-by-model eligibility, component requirements or a trade value for these three consoles.

What about a broken console?
The March promotion reportedly allowed defective retro consoles to be traded if they powered on. That was a promotion-specific condition, not a current general rule. GameStop’s current terms leave acceptance and value to its discretion, so contact a participating store about a defective system before relying on the old offer.
