The U.S. Department of Justice announced a 25-count indictment on January 23, 2025; the charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
What prosecutors say happened
According to the indictment as summarized by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the alleged scheme ran from September 2018 through July 2024. Prosecutors say Beckman raised more than $60 million from GameOn investors during that period by making false or misleading claims about the company’s finances and business.
Alleged misrepresentations and documents
Prosecutors allege that Beckman described revenue that did not exist, overstated the company’s cash balances, and made false or exaggerated claims about customer relationships. The indictment also alleges that fabricated materials included two audit reports and more than a dozen bank statements. Prosecutors say the names, email addresses, and signatures of at least seven real people were used without their permission.
One example cited by DOJ concerns a bank statement Lau allegedly delivered to a bank: it showed a GameOn account balance above $13 million, while the actual balance was $25.93. That is an alleged discrepancy described in the charging announcement, not a finding by a court.

Alleged use of investor money
DOJ says the couple allegedly used more than $4 million of investor funds for personal expenses. The examples in the announcement include San Francisco residences, private-school payments, and payments to the venue for their October 2023 wedding.
What prosecutors allege about Lau
The DOJ says Lau worked on GameOn corporate and transactional matters from at least 2016 to 2024. Prosecutors allege she provided Beckman with genuine audit reports obtained from her employer, which he used to fabricate reports; sent a fabricated audit report to an investor representative while knowing it was fake; and, in August 2024, lied to her employer and tried to delete hundreds of related files while a grand-jury investigation was pending.
What GameOn did
DOJ described GameOn as a San Francisco-based private company offering software that claimed artificial-intelligence capabilities to mimic human conversation and interaction—in other words, chatbot software. The announcement said the company’s customers included prominent U.S. professional sports leagues and teams and leading luxury fashion and retail brands. It did not identify or independently substantiate particular customer contracts, so those descriptions should not be treated as a verified customer list.
Charges and possible penalties
The 25-count indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, identity theft, and other offenses. Lau was also charged with obstruction of justice. DOJ’s announcement lists statutory maximum penalties that could apply if a defendant were convicted, including up to 20 years for each wire-fraud count and up to 30 years for a bank-fraud-conspiracy or false-statement-to-a-bank count.

Those figures are legal maximums, not predictions of a sentence. They do not mean either defendant was convicted or sentenced. The DOJ announcement states that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The official DOJ case page for U.S. v. Alexander Beckman et al., 25-CR-00012 RFL lists an initial appearance and arraignment on January 23, 2025, and release on bond. It also lists later status hearings and a May 14, 2026 motion hearing concerning defense counsel withdrawal motions. At that hearing, the court deferred disposition while appointments for counsel on an extended-form basis were pending.

The surfaced case page does not establish a later plea, ruling, trial date, or final outcome. The indictment remains an accusation; a current docket would be needed to verify any later development.
