Activision Blizzard’s official shutdown page says it “has sunset the GameBattles platform,” and the service’s closure took effect on January 15, 2024. The shutdown announcement was posted on November 13, 2023, according to contemporary coverage.
When did GameBattles shut down?
The platform and service shut down on January 15, 2024. The GameBattles account announced the decision on November 13, 2023, saying: “After careful consideration, we have decided to shut down the GameBattles platform and service as of January 15th, 2024.” Contemporary reports reproduced that announcement. Insider Gaming’s coverage and Esports.gg’s coverage document the announcement and effective date.
What was GameBattles?
GameBattles was an online competition platform, not a Call of Duty game mode. Activision Support described it as part of the Major League Gaming network and a destination for competitive console and PC gaming, with tournaments, leagues, ladders, and forums. Activision’s support article also explains one specific integration for the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare beta: teams created or accepted matches through GameBattles, while the integration set up lobbies, maps, and modes, used dedicated servers, and reported results to the website. That account describes the beta integration; it should not be taken to mean every title on GameBattles worked the same way.
Activision Support reported more than 10 million registered gamers and more than 16 million teams worldwide in an article dated November 21, 2019. Those are historical figures from that time, not current user or team counts.

- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
Why did GameBattles close?
The public shutdown announcement said the decision followed “careful consideration,” but did not give a more specific reason. Insider Gaming reported that GameBattles operations supervisor Chris Evans said staff had been told the service would close and they would be let go as part of the closure. Evans described GameBattles as “the last remaining branch of MLG.” This provides context about the closure, but does not establish a fuller corporate rationale.
How long did GameBattles operate?
Esports.gg reports that GameBattles was founded in 2003 and offered amateur and semi-professional online tournaments. On that account, its January 2024 shutdown came roughly two decades later; “after 20 years” is a rounded description, not an exact service-duration calculation from an official founding date. Esports.gg also reports that Activision Blizzard acquired MLG in 2016 and that GameBattles later narrowed its lineup to Activision Blizzard games. These are secondary-source historical details.

The listed email is a contact route, not confirmation that accounts or records can be retrieved or that the address is actively monitored.
